Technics said screw with Class A.
Here is CLASS AA!
I always liked the look of those Technics amps with the big meters.I see they have re introduced one with them.

I am glad to see Technics made a comeback last year but the price of the Reference series is up there with Accuphase and Luxman! I hope Onkyo, Denon and Sony (especially Onkyo M-510) comes back with an updated Class A stuff.Sophisticated = unusually complicated = degraded sound.
Just playing devil advocate based on owning and hearing the "New Class A" components back in the day.

Well, Dan A'gustino didn't think so!Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -
Ok' Mr. Hardy! I will raise the bar a little.
The amp is 845 SET but wait it's using SMPS for "experimental" filament heating. In fact, the amp is being upgraded right now and it's in my "LAB" room.
When I am done, it will be a 3 chassis with regulated dc (linear) filament heater with Coleman regulators. Of course, it can use AC heater with a simple flip of the switch.

Thank you! But you have given up too easily.
The Bottlehead 300B SET with the mesh plate is very special in it's own rights. There is plenty of upgrade path for the BH gear as well.
In case anyone wondered, have I gone to the dark side?
Absolutely NO! I still immensely enjoy the SS gears as much as I used to. I just like very low wattage SET tube gear with the very efficient line array.
1.5W makes my neighbors hate me! Of course, there is always 500W SS amps on standby to encourage a few annoying neighbors to move. lolTrying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -

Mr. Pass is right! The lab power supplies looks much cooler than the SMPS bricks.
My low voltage low powered 845 SET in "a la Pass" mode using lab power supplies with Coleman regulators in a test run.
Oh boy, are those power supplies a little too big to fit in a third box? Each one is supplying 15V regulated DC up to 15A. All for powering 10V filament for 845 amps which makes about 8 CLASS A WATTS!
No Smoke so far!~

Impressive lookin project James. 15 amps? Those look like some serious regulators with some serious heatsinking on those power transistors.

Thanks Fred! I didn't build the amp. A lot of credits needs to be given to the late Charles from Washington State. I bought the amp from a guy through ebay who acquired it from the estate of Charles.
The regulators are kits from Rod Coleman from U.K. The heatsinks are the old pentium 3 heatsinks I salvaged from the used computers before. The pre-drilled holes alinged perfectly so I used them. The regulators do dissipate a lot of heat for supplying 33W to the filaments. I need to find better heatsinks. The lab PS are the ebay finds for about $50 a piece. I can't build myself a linear PS with $50.
Well, all in all, it's cheap and effective.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin:
