Hey guys it has been decided that we will get a PS3 for the boys. I have a few questions.

1) What features do you absolutely love/hate about the ps3? (Besides bluray, and wireless capability...ect...the obvious)

2) Do you guys use the internet functionality with it? I hear you can browse the internet, and that if you get a keyboard and mouse it is fairly easy to do. Anyone do this?

3) What is up with the different sized hard drives? I have yet to determine what exactly you are using the hard drive for except for maybe downloading bluray movies.....which I will not be doing. Or storing music, which I will be streaming from my computer to the ps3.

I play online a little bit but thats not my thing anyway. With all the updates to there is alot of new features. The downloadable games and trailers are pretty good. I have an original 60 gig with about 20 games with all the game files and updates I still have about 41 out of 55 gigs. Some of the big games in the works will be useing more space but 60 gigs is alot of info.

1.) Love the familiarity of the controller, and setting up the wireless connection was a breeze. Not enough games out until recently, but they appear to be rolling in in droves now. Bluray is nice, but I've also been impressed with the upconversion of regular dvd's as well. I don't even have a dvd player in the living room anymore...

2.) I tried the internet functionality, but my tv only displays 720p so it didn't look great. A little clunky as well, but I was working without a kb/mouse so that would have helped I'm sure. The best thing about getting online with the PS3 at this point is updated firmware, free demos and online gaming (same as the 360...)

3.) The newer 40gb HD PS3's are NOT backwards compatible with PS2 games (if I read that correctly in another post...) I have the 60gb and can't imagine running out of room any time soon. Some of the demos can be fairly sizeable, and I'm sure there will be downloadable expansion packs (if there aren't already) so I don't mind the extra space right now.

All in all, I like it. Had 2 360's crap out on me in 3 weeks, traded the 2nd one in for a PS3 and its been smooth sailing since.

Yeah I know that there is no backward compatibility. And I really cannot see that being an issue with me. I had a ps2 at one point in time. And there is really no game out on the ps2 that really makes me want to upgrade to an 80gb version.

The thing I liked about the 40gb version is it still carries the wireless functionality. There was a lot of speculation that this was going to be removed.

Free online play, bluetooth headset, and whisper quiet operation are all very nice for me. Plus all the USB ports, expansion bays, and the ability to buy your own HD and install it is just very consumer friendly on the hardware end after the initial investment -- you don't have to buy sony branded hard drives if you want more room and I appreciate that.

The wireless is great. the aesthetics of the media bar is very simple and elegant, making the 360s blade setup seem a bit garish. On that note the PSN store (same as xbox live marketplace) has a lot more artistic games (flOw, everyday shooter).

I use the keyboard mouse combo sometimes for internet, but am more excited about their use in games (ala Unreal 3). Also as a media hub it performs exceptionally well.

Really though, I love the blu-ray and the games. Uncharted, Warhawk, and Call of Duty 4 will carry me through till Christmas. Not that the games are at all better than what is on 360 (not yet anyway. Time will tell), but there are a lot of solid games now.

Just bought a second PS3 for the upstairs. I don't surf the net too often...a bit too clunky w/o a keyboard or mouse. I'm currently playing Assasin's Creed and so far it's a great game. Keep in mind that the 40GB doesn't have the card reader either, if that's important to you.

Explain the card reader to me please? Is this like a sd/memory stick card reader?

Also has anyone ever attached a usb port expander on the ps3?

You really don't need a large hard drive unless you want to keep media files locally on the ps3. It can stream files from a pc, but I've found it more convenient to have everything on one machine hooked up to the main rig. Fewer things to turn on etc. Makes showing off the home videos or pictures a breeze if the family visits for the holidays...;) (another advantage of having the memory card slots too, I suppose)

I wouldn't use it as the main storage for files that are important to you as any hard drive can fail. But with my 200gig drive I never have to worry too much about moving copies of stuff over and running out of space. redkawa.com has all the free encoding and file server software a person needs to make converting and copying files easy...

i prefer the 360 controllers, but in smaller hands, maybe the ps3 is better.

intenet browsing sucks hard even using mouse and keyboard.

that said, i might possibly get one for my kids as well. that or the 360. wii are nearly impossible to come by and i'd rather steal one before i shell out twice it's retail value on e-****.

Well I made the plunge and got the 40gb ps3. Got Ratchet & Clank, Resistence: Fall of Man, another 6 axis controller, and the DVD remote control.

Tried to find Warhawk, but was unable to. Anyways I got it off the Dell website. Now I just need to make sure that I go to a local gamestop and pickup the forms for my free five blu-ray dvd's.

I figure iff I need more usb posrts I can buy a USB extender.

Get the 80gig........why not get the best of the best ? over the 40gig..you'll get 2 more usb ports......so one for a wireless keyboard if you need it, one for your wireless guitar for GH3.......and then you can still charge your controllers/bluetooth headsets...plus...you can download all the demo's and updates/packs (i.e motorstorm cars & tracks) or even full games, and still have room for all your game files and not need to worry about memory.. besides if you open your PS3 to replace your harddrive you will probably void your warranty.
I have the 60gig. love my games.....

I had an issue with my first unit. The fans would go at full throttle after a few minutes. I replaced it. The new unit doesn't have that issue.

    1) I actually like the bluetooth feature since my PS3 is kinda recessed and it would have been hard to control BR playback when the Mrs and I are watching it from the breakfast table (funky position due to apartment living).
    2) Haven't tried the Internet features.
    3) I have the 60G because it went on sale. I do not have a PS2 so I had no intention of buying it for backward compatibility.

Nah dude I already looked and you can get a external hard drive, convert it to fat32, and you are good to go. So I can get an external hard drive any where from 250gb to 320gb at around 75 dollars, and a 4 port usb hub in the 15 dollar range. So in the long ru it made some sense to me.

Walmart had an online sale for the 40GB PS3, 1 game, and remote for $399.00. Did you get any good discounts through Dell?

No interest for 1 year, and free shipping. That was about it. I waited to late to get the good deals because my wife and I were on the fence about whether to get this or not. And I was not going to rush in without really weighing the pro's and con's.

It did come with Spidey 3, but I think they all come like that. (The 40gb versions) Plus my buddy has Motorstorm that he no longer plays and he said we can borrow it for as long as we want, so you can't beat that either.

Best deal is still at Sony, from what I've seen, when it is in stock. They have them for $399+tax+free shipping+free controller+Spiderman 3+(5) free movies. And if you sign up for a sony credit card, you get $100 credit towards your first purchase. That puts the player at $299 or $399, depending on the model you get. I've looked at getting one strictly for the fact that it is a good BD player to have on hand as a demo piece. I've got a Wii, and have sold 7 of them since I put it in the living room demo system.

tax-free so long as there is no sonystyle retail outfit in your state. there is in AZ so i had to pay tax. but no biggie as i got free shipping and back then it was $150 off vs $100.
