I purchased a Toshiba HD-A3 or w/e (was 299.99 - Best Buy had it for 199.99 with 7 free HDDVDs ---)

I bought it mainly to get away from the fan thats in my XBox 360 --

Then come to find out, it has a freaking fan too...

Why all the fans??

You just gotta be cool, man. They can get annoying though.

these new toys are built on PC platforms, so they have mem chips, cpus, etc. As said they gotta stay cool. Of all the toys I have, my 360 is rather loud so I know where youre coming from with that.

Noisy fans totally suck. PC based, huh? How about ripping out the fans and installing a water cooling system?

That would be cool, but I have yet to try a water cooling system, too afraid of a leak.

If the cooling fans are PC-like, you may be able to swap it out for an aftermarket fan designed to run quiet. Just a suggestion that might help.

That one fan really bothers you? Some of these Sony projectors can have up to 14 fans!

    Info link:http://www.curtpalme.com/CRTPrimer_27.shtm

"The entire Sony 12XX line of projectors is known to be quite noisy due to the fans used to cool the projector. The 1292 is even noisier than the other models due to a total of 14 fans. A hush box is recommended for these Sony's if the noise bothers you."

What are ya gonna do, you want to process all that digital video and sound, you need a pretty beefy processor to do it, and beefy processors get hot. The fan they used is pretty quiet - quieter than most PCs - so while they could have maybe tried to get a little quieter I think a little noise is going to be necessary barring watercooling (which is way too expensive for a device that Toshiba is already losing money on).
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

You could also figure out the size/voltage of the fan and get a replacement 'quiet fan' from someplace like endpcnoise.com

Those Pabst and Nexus fans are pretty damn quiet, however, if the fan is small (40mm size), it might not be any quieter.

or you could just live with it and turn up the volume so that you don't hear it.

My bro had one on his overclocked computer. Cool as hell and worked as advertised. It worked quite well in fact.
