Anyone playing Crysis?

I've been on the VTOL stuff now for 6 hours straight, and just can't beat it. This is the single most frustrating experience I've ever had playing a game...

Anyone beat the game yet, or at least got past this level, have any tips to share?

WooHoo!!!!! I just beat the game, on medium difficulty. Flying that VTOL was a ****, I had to break out my XBOX 360 controller to get the job done, doing it with the keyboard was just too combersome.

The end battle was a bit excessive, but still fun nonetheless.

I'm running mine on High settings under XP and have no issues. It seems to run a bit slower under Vista for some reason, so I played it on XP. I need to figure out why it's so slow on Vista, as I'd like to see it run with the DX10 visuals.

This game is nothing short of stunning if your PC can handle it, I won't spoil any opf the gameplay details.

    My system:

    AMD X2 6400+
    4GB DDR2 6400 OCZ Platinum
eVGA 8800GT Ko video card (soon to be two run in SLI)
    XP and Vista 32 bit

Ben, have you tried running the GPU benchmark in the game directory, how does that run for you? I've had no freezing issues at all, just that my framerate in Vista on High settings is about 30 FPS or less in some cases.

    V:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis\Bin32\

There are two files, one for the CPU and one for the GPU. Here's how I have mine set up in Vista, I'm now getting between 33 - 37 fps on average.

Under Advanced Graphics settings in the game:

Textures, Objects, Shaders, Particles, Volumetric effects, and postprocessing are all on high, the other settings are on Medium. Turning down the water, physics, and a couple other things down yielded about 6 - 8 more fps, which put just just in the range that I consider to be playable.

In addition, turning these down to medium didn't have much of an impact on the visuals. Obviously there is some impact because I'm getting better fps, but I really can't see it - and I'm looking for it.

I've not tested at that resolution - I'm running at 1680x1050, native for my monitor. Well it's not a performance issue then, so not sure what's going on for you. You on Vista or XP?

Vista. It plays fine, and then it goes to load a new level, and freezes occasionally. I am not sure if it is due to the quad core. I have the 163 drivers. I tried the 169 drivers, and had some issues.

Maniac, how do you like that card? I just ordered an MSI version of the same card from Dell. I used to own 2 8800GTX cards in SLI, but sold them to get some audio gear. From what I hear, the GT card can really hold its own. Any thoughts?

I think it's a great card, it's jut hard to find right now. I'm personally an eVGA guy, but I'm sure the MSI is good as well. When they come back down in price I'm going to order a second one to run in SLI. It's not an 8800GTX, but it's damn close...

I like XFX. I had never had any issues with them. I would shy away from MSI video cards, but I do like their MoBo's. No matter where you buy check out newegg.com for reviews. It will save some headaches down the road.

Hahaha. I haven't played it in a LONG time. Granted, I don't have the game, just the SP demo.

Well I just beat it on hard. Lots of drama at the end. Easy to tell its over by the music. Of coarse it had to leave you wanting the sequel. I wish Far Cry had a sequel with Crysis graphics.

Beautiful game, I'm running on all medium settings with the exception of 'high' shaders and 4x AA, on Vista. I believe I'm at the end of the game (aircraft carrier). I love how the bullets interact with every branch of every tree and you can cut down trees Jesse Ventura Predator style. I also like the free format of the game, you can pretty much wander around all over the place if you wanted to. I do wish there was a "foilage control" in the advanced graphics settings, it could run a lot faster if there weren't 10000 blades of grass and tree branches on the screen.

At CES, on all high settings, they ran triple-SLI mode 8800 GTX's and still didn't do better than 30-40 fps.

    Polkmaniac...

Just so you know, you are wasting 2gb out of your 4 right now without a 64-bit OS.

Just a heads up in case you weren't aware.

Now this is what I have been waiting for. Crysis was fun, and all, but FarCry 2 is what I am hoping to be what I thought Crysis was going to be!!!

That's actually inaccurate. I don't feel like typing out a big long explanation, so I'll keep it short:

1 - A 32 bit OS can support 4gb of RAM. Do the math, the numbers support this.
2 - Of course, some of that memory gets set aside for system resources, and with how it's handled by Windows, with 4GB installed you typically get somewhere between 3 and 3.5 GB RAM available to Windows.

So, a 32 bit OS isn't really the limiting factor, as the math confirms that a 32 bit OS can address 4GB of RAM. The issue really is Windows, but even then, Windows XP and Vista can both access at least 3 of the 4 GB RAM installed...so having 4 instead of 2 GB does yeild an improvement.

Yes, a 64bit OS can address more RAM, and I'd get better performance out of my 4GB, but there are other issues with 64 Windows that I'm not yet ready to address...

That's actually not the entire story either. PAE on the newer Intel and AMD chips allows a 32-bit operating system to access up 64 gigabytes worth of memory. It's just very rare that you'd ever need to from a non-server/high end video production standpoint ;)
