I shoot a D200. You will really enjoy your D40. A couple of things I would recommend. Buy the best glass you can. The lenses will far outlast your camera.

Buy a good tripod and ball head..

Solid entry level DSLR, especially if you got it for that BlackFriday price at Sears. Great jpegs right out of the camera with the kit lens. Definitely buy some more lenses down the road as you expand your knowledge.

We started out with the Canon Digital Rebel and have been meaning to upgrade to the 10D, then 20D, then 30D but just never got around to it. New lens have been more important and by the time we got the range we wanted we just never bothered to upgrade.

Yes, sometimes I wish my camera turned on faster, the write speed was faster, and a shutter lock was included but they haven't been urgent needs. Have fun with your camera, learn as much as possible, and upgrade as needed. Get a good tripod.

    Have fun!

Canon 10D here. It's fun but I don't bother to carry it with me as much as I used to. I definitely need to get some new lenses.

If you have Yahoo account, I recommend Flickr for your photo sharing. I have some of my pictures up here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sami_kallio/collections/ . Don't expect anything professional, I don't bother with settings that much anymore either, although my cousin ended up using my wedding shots for her pictures instead of the professional shots. :) Some of the photos could be clearer, which leads back to the "needs better lenses".

Just purchased a Canon 40D with a 17-40 L lens. Amazing camera. And, I agree that the most important purcahses are the lens/glass choices. So, I am going to go slow and keep all future lens purchases at the pro-level. Better performance. Better seals. Better re-sale (if needed).

technically its a christmas present from the parents... so i cant exactly play with it, but i tried it out a little and was really impressed. in automatic mode it takes really great pictures. the detail in the dslr is simply amazing, i came from a canon sd630 which is around 7MP and this 6MP nikon smokes it. My dad has an older canon rebel eos 35mm and i have some experience with that, so i dont think it will be to hard to combine my digital knowledge with my slr knowledge. Any recommendations on good books to learn from? I am already shopping around for a telephoto lens (55-200mm) there is a nice nikkor on amazon for around 130 that has af-s so maybe that. Now i just cant wait till xmas so i can use it more.

I got a pentax *ist for christmas a couple of years back and love it (it had great reviews. the biggest issue most had was the friggin name). But one of the reasons I did get it was that it would fit my lenses from my old pentax sf10 (about 15 years old). I think most of the digital SLRs get a decent review, and they are tons of fun. You can just click away like a mad man, then delete the crap you don't want and start over.
