Hi, I will start by admitting I am a total noob to the world of quality audio. Five years ago I purchased a sony 5.1 receiver, a panasonic DVD player and Acoustic Research Sat/Sub package, I think I spent a whopping $500, for the first few years I was in happy as a pig in slop! Then I remembered a college buddy who had a pair of polks, well every party he was designated DJ, those speakers had so much body they filled any space with loud rich music. That memory started my Craig's List search for my very own polks. A couple of months ago I found a pair of Monitor 10's the black studio version for $200 in near mint condition, when I was to meet to close the deal the seller backed out. I had done my research by lurking and reading old post here. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago and I found listed and purchased my FIRST POLKS! They are Polk Audio RTA 12C, in fair cosmetic condition, it appears that one of the tweeters was replaced and they sound warm and rich, of course I really want to replace my Sony with something that will still handle the 5.1 or 7.1 when watching movies, but more importantly a receiver that will handle the 2 channel music more musically. Without further delay here are a few pictures in the following order:

fronts (clothed)
fronts (naked)
tweeters
C/O

again thanks for the help and yes I will and do have questions.

    Welcome to the forum Tx, great speakers you have there. The 12c's are excellent. The first thing I would look to do is replace the Sony. There are great brand AVR's on the market. What you want to look for is one with 7.1 pre/outs. The pre/outs will allow you to go with external amps in the future.

    My favorite AVR is the HK. harman/kardon builds excellent AVR's and has pre/outs for upgrades later on. I own a HK 635, I bought form http://www.harmanaudio.com/ , they are referbished, half the price of new, tested to work, and full factory warranty.

    You might want to check into something with 1.3 HDMI connection, to take advantage of the new surround formats avaliable with the HD players (for future upgrades).

    Denon, Marantz and Onkyo are just some of the other great manufactures, but I found the HK sounds best with Polks.

    The next step, I would do, is upgrade the tweeters. Polk has the new RDO tweeters which I understand are even smother and better sounding then the originals. Maybe someone could chime in on the model # that replaces your current tweet.

    You have stepped in a new relm of sound now. Try not to get too upgrade crazy...lol

    But again , good luck and welcome...

    Welcome. A great looking set of Polks and thanks for including pictures (I am sooo easy to amuse).

    I second (for the most part) what jakelm said. I have an HK AVR-240. I like all the 7.1 flexibility but find it a little lacking in power for 4-6 ohm Polks. I bought a 5-channel Carver amp and now use the HK for a pre-amp/processor so I'm definitely in favor of having pre/outs. If you view a new receiver as a "temporary amplification source" but a "long term SS processor" then I would definitely agree with the HK, Denon, Onkyo suggestion.
    Sony 60'' SXRD 1080p
    Amp = Carver AV-705THX 5-Channel
    Processor = NAD T747
    Panasonic BD35 Blu-Ray
    Main = SDA-1C Studio with RD0s, spikes, XO rebuild, rings, I/C upgrade
    Center=Polk CS10, Surround = Athena Dipoles, Sub= Boston 12HO
    Music/Video Streaming = Netgear NEO550
    TT = Audio Technica

    I knew the Sony was the weak link but I'll have to wait till after the holidays before I start looking for a replacement. Someone mentioned a tweeter upgrade, anyone know a ballpark dollar amount for the replacement tweeters? Also from the above Tweeter close up picture 3 of the 4 grill mount knobs are broken, anyone know the part number or name so I can order some. I forgot to mention I purchased the speakers for $150, every time I listen to them or even walk by them I get a smile on my face, the kind of smile that comes from getting a true bargain.

    russman, if there is a DFW meeting of 'polkies' please give me a heads up at abel(at)abelsanchez(dot)com I really would like to hear some of the high end system I keep reading about. The fellow I purchased these from was driving them with a HUGE Integra Amp and a Carver CD that was bigger than my receiver, the first CD I played was the Oh Brother where art Thou soundtrack, the first track in the chain gang breaking rocks, I said wow he said Holy ****, I knew I could live with them.

    Welcome TX

    REGARDS SNOW
    Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D
