So in a moment of weakness I clicked the Buy-it-Now on these Monitor 5JR+. Can anyone tell me exactly what I'm dealing with. I know that there are some strong preferences among members for certain models of tweeters on vintage Polk's.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'll leave the specific comments up to the experts but I think you got a great deal. The 5JR+ sold for $370 a pair new and the SL2500 is trickle-down SL3000 technology from the SRS line. No tax, free shipping, and they look great. I know it''a a generalization but if the seller was using tubes to drive them then he's probably the type guy who appreciates and takes care of his equipment.Sony 60'' SXRD 1080p
Amp = Carver AV-705THX 5-Channel
Processor = NAD T747
Panasonic BD35 Blu-Ray
Main = SDA-1C Studio with RD0s, spikes, XO rebuild, rings, I/C upgrade
Center=Polk CS10, Surround = Athena Dipoles, Sub= Boston 12HO
Music/Video Streaming = Netgear NEO550
TT = Audio Technica -

I had similar thoughts. In fact that was the straw that broke the camels back.HT

I've still got a pair of those that I bought new in 1992. I always have enjoyed them and I really don't think you could go wrong at that price.
I haven' t had the amount of equipment go through my house that many CP folks here have, but I think they do a good job at what they do--They're clear and musical, and while they don't have anything approaching the bass response of my 11TLs, they do OK for what I consider to be a large bookshelf speaker.
I replaced the tweeters with the RDO's and I really feel that was a significant improvement. When I first got them, I was amazed by the treble response, but over time began to feel that they were a bit "too" present in the treble. I melted the SL2500 tweeters with a crappy receiver and eventually found my way to Club Polk for advice on how to replace them. Enough time went by before I installed the new tweets that I didn't have the clearest A/B impression of the RDO vs. the SL2500, but I know that my ears preferred the silk domes.
I've still got the Monitor Series 2 literature--Let me know if you'd like a scan of them. It appears that I've got the black and white owners manual as well as the glossy color sales booklet.
Anyhow, enjoy your new speaks! Let us know your impressions once you throw some wattage at them. Mine are currently "resting" until we finish our bedroom addition, so perhaps your comments might spur me to finish the electronics portion of the project.

I had a new pair of these in 1992 as well, loved them. They were shown no mercy and driven with a 250 watt Soundcraftsmen amp. You'll get very decent bass response out of them and their bigger brother eats up current like I've rarely seen in a bookshelf.Lovin that music year after year.

That would be great. I'd be more than happy to compensate you for your time.
Would you prefer to print and mail them, or just scan and e-mail them. I have no problem printing them myself if you wish to save yourself some time.
Thanks again!

Hi Dave,
PM me your email address and I'll send out the PDF scans I made. Let me know if they come out OK on your end, if not I can send out a hard copy.
Still want to hear from you once you get a chance to listen to them.

They have arrived.....but not without issue. The seller actually packed them quite well. However between the age of the speakers and the low temperatures, apparently the hot glue on the crossover couldn't hold up anymore. One speaker had an inductor that had completely come off the crossover board, the other speaker had one hanging by a single lead. So I spent about an hour re-soldering and gluing the coils back on. All seems to be working well. Other than the crossovers, these speakers are in great shape! The only flaws I've found are some tiny dings on the back corners.
Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to get a set of speaker stands back from a friend of mine so that I can do some serious listening.HT
