pre-out question

Hi, I haven't come across this particular issue so I thought i'd throw it out there. I am running a HK 7300 as a pre-pro with a Bryston 4bst amp running off the pre outs for the rti 12 mains. My question is would it work to take the jumper off the 12's, run the external amp to the low end of the speakers and hook up the high end of the speakers to the receiver? In other words can I use the both the pre-outs and the receiver amp at the same time to power the fronts?
Thanks for reading

Always thought once the pre-outs are used, the amp section for that channel is dissabled.Maybe different in your avr but thought that all are like that.
And if you could do that,I personally would not.Much rather bi-wire than have a good amp and a not so good amp combo.HT SYSTEM-

Thanks for the replies, yes I guess what I am considering is bi-amping. It just seems a bit of a waste of potential output to the speakers.
cheers -
Do let us know if the "potential" was actually worth it as opposed to your amp running the whole show.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2

It would work, but the gain on the Bryston may be different than the HK speaker outputs. Meaning the mid/highs might be louder or quieter than the woofers. I just replaced my Rotel power amp with a Bryston, and had to recalibrate, because the Bryston was slightly louder than the Rotel with the volume knob at the same position. But that may be just my system or my imagination. Good luck.:)

It would work, but what are you trying to accomplish? You have a great amp running your 12's why would you want to hook up a lesser amp to run part of them? Not only that, but by moving the 12's to a separate amp, you were able to make more power available for your other speakers. (that are still being run by the AVR) Why reduce that just for the benefit of making your 12's sound worse?
I could be wrong, but thats my take on it...

stick to the byston. most current avr's dont cut the speakers when you use the pre's, but the bryston is going to sound better than biamping w/ what you've got.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19

Thank you for your replies.....the consensus seems to be to leave things status quo. McLoki, you have brought forward an excellent point, thanks.
I guess my initial concern was would it work technically without the risk of damage to the components which does not seem to be a concern. dell44, your response on the gain and the adjustments you had to make - should I go forward on an experimental basis knowing that things can be reversed can you elaborate on the steps you took?
thanks everyone -
I stand corrected.
They are just opinions - neither of us stands corrected yet....should I go forward on an experimental basis knowing that things can be reversed
Sure - give it a shot. Next time Keiko and I get together - one of us owes the other a beer (or beverage of the winner choice) over the outcome...

The Rotel 1070 that I was using to power the Studio's I used to power the Voice center bi-amped. And after I got the Bryston all hooked up to the main speakers, I went to the menu in my pre pro and redid the test tones. The center and surrounds were slightly off. Doing was you have suggested may sound just fine but I think you would be better off just using the Bryston to power your mains like others have suggested. It's a great amp.:D

I have our RTi12's bi-amped with a pair of Adcom amps. 200 wpc on the low end and 125 wpc on the upper end.
This set-up works well, but one day I plan on owning a single high current amp. to power the 12's with a bi-wire hook up.
One thing you might try is to throw away the cheap jumpers that come with your speakers and either make or buy a set of good ones...and forget the bi-amping...that or get yourself a good set of bi-wire cables that has been mentioned.
Just my 2 cents, either way it sounds like you have some nice gear and your set-up is going to sound damn good no matter what you decide on. -
Thanks for the additional info del44. Never considered the Bi-wire cables Mike, another
idea I might try with just the amp. Ditto on your gear.
