This may be an easy question, but I'm not sure of the answer. If I was going to hook up a DVD player via HDMI to a HD tv like this one, could I use it's digital coax output to get the sound into my AVR?

    Yes. It's what I do.

Though digital coax / optical don't have the same bandwidth as HDMI, so you can't get things like "TrueHD". Just DTS or less.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Sweet. I can live without TrueHD for the time being, just didn't want to get hit with an urgent need to upgrade my AVR after getting an Hd dvd player after getting an LCD and so on..

    Thanks, bobman!
