Front Door Speaks 6x9 vs 6.5

I have heard in the past that 6.5's sound better and have better response than 6x9's, is this correct? I am trying to decide on speakers for the front doors of my tundra which use 6x9's. Though, it's easy enough to build plates.

Not necessarily correct. The argument is that a round speaker is more rigid than an oval one and so it wont distort as easily. While thats true, a quality manufacturer can easily make a plenty rigid oval cone that wont distort and you get plenty of clean sound with the added cone area and low frequency response of a 6x9.

Now if youre talking about a $500 set of round speakers versus a $50 set of Kraco 6x9's then yeah, the round ones win. But you take the MMC690's and stack them up against most anything in the $300 and under range and youre on to something. Unfortunately there arent many brands making high dollar 6x9 components, so once you get into the $400+ range of component speakers, those will be better than any 6x9 coaxial you can get.

So bottom line is if youre wanting a really cheap speaker, then get the round one. If youre willing to pay more for some speakers, get a quality made set of 6x9's and enjoy.

    I'm in a similar quandry.

My tacoma pickup has cutouts for 6x9 up front and 6.5 in back, so I assumed that's what I should get. I have a great pair of polk 6.5 carbon-fiber driver speakers I pulled out of my beetle before selling it (coaxial), so I figured they'd go in back with new 6x9s up front.

But now I see that polk's 6x9s are all coaxial and that they don't offer a component version. This is a bummer bcs the door has a cutout for a tweeter up higher to offer better sound dispersion and I want to take advantage of that. Should I get a pair of component 6.5 for the front instead? The truck doesn't have much room for a sub so I was hoping to avoid needing one.

Besides Polks, my other favourite speakers are Image Dynamics and they actually make a great 6x9 component set in their top-of-the-line XS series :).

(just throwing it out there so you know you got options :))

My 6*9 polk momos are the best set I have ever heard I can cranck them up with no distortion and it sounds lie I actualy have a sub in the back. So in my opinion the MMC690's are the best.

Nothing wrong with getting the MMC6500's. They sound great and have the separate tweeters. There wont be much less midbass from the 6500's then youd get from the 690's and the overall improvement in SQ from the better tweeter location and the better crossover, youll come out ahead.
