Rapper Jay-Z dissing the dollar

Wads of dollar bills are usually as much a part of rap videos as fast cars, diamond-encrusted jewellery and scantily-clad models.

But in an apparent nod to the low value of the dollar, rapper Jay-Z's new video Blue Magic features another currency.

He is seen cruising the streets of New York in Bentleys and Rolls Royces (now owned by Germany's Volkswagen and BMW) with a briefcase of 500 euro notes.

It follows reports that the supermodel Gisele Bündchen also favours euros.

The catwalk star's twin sister and manager Patricia told Bloomberg in September that: "Contracts starting now are more attractive in euros because we don't know what will happen to the dollar."

The US currency has been ticking off historic lows over the past few months as falling US interest rates make other currencies more attractive.

It recently passed $2.10 to the pound, reached parity with the Canadian dollar and set an all-time record of $1.4752 to the euro.

Other more conventional market-watchers have also been snubbing the dollar, including the billionaire investor Warren Buffett.

There have been no suggestions that Jay-Z's fellow rapper 50 Cent could be considering a move into a different currency.

Yeah, the music was made for the movie.

The US dollar is becoming irrelevant. Expect higher inflation in the next few years fueled by exhorbitant fuel prices.

Should the USA join the European Union? Hmmmm...

He should give all the American dollars back that he made here and move to Europe.

"Blue" in a drug name usually refers to heroin, no?

I guess if the dollar continues to weaken, we'll see more FDI, and more demand for US exports b/c they'll be considerably cheaper to persons in other countries b/c the purchasing power of their currency in relation to ours has increased. Hopefully that will mean more American jobs kicking back into action, and a bit of a boost to our economy...

That's just 1 of a billion pieces of the puzzle...

Yeah, but who's gonna provide the cheap labor in the USA? You? Me? Or our amigos from south of the border? And most "Americans" will be working for foreign companies who will exploit the USA just as this country has been doing since it was founded.

If what you're saying happens, the US will become a third world country, while Europe, China, Japan, and India dominate the world's economy.

If wealthy Americans are jumping ship, then we can only expect turbulent waters for the rest of us.

And to be honest, my viewpoint there was all sunshine and roses. In reality, investors are momentum driven; as in they want to invest in assets going up not down. The weaker the dollar has been in recent years, the more $$ we have seen flowing out of the US and into emerging mkts and foreign RE....
