Subwoofer popping sound

I know this issue is very common, but I don't know which terms to use for the forum's search feature, so I gotta ask it again --

My sub has a loud "pop" sound upon power on and power down, although to a lesser extent. It occurs whether the pre is on or off. I've tried cheater plugs on the sub, but that doesn't work. The sub is plugged into a different wall outlet, but they're probably on the same circuit, if that matters at all.

Two questions --

1. Does the popping sound damage the amp or the driver?

2. How do I get rid of it?

Thanks.

I would, but it hums a little. Not a problem when a movie or TV is playing, but in quiet moments it's noticeable.

Wont damage anything. I get the same thing from my sub and front speakers as the caps discharge. The volume level is pretty low (well under 88db) so I would guess based on that - less than one watt is going to the speakers.

I have tried all kinds of sequences to stop the popping but nothing works. Now I just live with it and don't worry about it.

Have you tried another sub cable?Or power cable? Try plugging it into a power conditioner, sometimes that helps. My first guess is the sub cable though. These little annoying things can drive you nuts.
