I'm thinking about getting a PS3 and wonder how it is for its DVD upscaling. How is it compared to an HD-A2/3 or an Oppo 980H?

Bolu Ray is effing awesome, and is worth the $399 price tag alone. However, I don't feel it does a very good job at upscaling. It's definitely not on par with the A2 or the Oppo that I own - and I'm not even really picky...

You know, I should do tests on DVD upscale between my PS3 and A30 on the 133" screen and take some snap shots. I wonder how it would come out. Some people noted earlier that the PS3 sucked but that was before some major firmware changes that directly targeted the up scaling.

I am personally very impressed with the DVD upscaling capabilities of the PS3 since the update.

Silverti, if you are going to take snapshots make sure you set your exposure setting properly and you will get good results.

Thanks for the input, but before you try and show us what the pics look like, I'm interested in your general opinion of the PS3 DVD upscaling capabilities. Seeing a still pic isn't the same as moving film. Is the PS3 good enough (great?) with upscaling? As good at the A3?

I agree...after that update, DVD's look very, very good. I don't have a reference player to compare it to, but I have a Sony DVD player with HDMI and the picture is just as nice, if not better.

I've done side by side comparisons, on several titles. I just bought the PS3 recently and have downloaded all the firmware updates. It's not bad really, but when I do side-by-side comparisons with my A2, the A2 is noticeably better.

Although you can tell on almost anything, it's very evident on something like Ice Age or the other animated stuff...

Thanks for all the input. I think my decision is getting clearer: PS3 should be able to do it all - BD, DVD upconverions (games are just an added bonus for me as I'm not a big gamer, yet) And if they incorporate the PVR in 2008 like they plan to in Europe, well, who wouldn't want one!! Definitely the best BD deal around.

I'm currently running a panasonic DVD-35 that only has progressive scan. It has to be better than that, right? My display is the Panny 42PX75.

Toshiba's HD players make an excellent upconvert picture. Much better than my Oppo 981.

I would put the PS3 on the same line as the Oppo 971.
    Monitor 7b's front
    Monitor 4's surround
Frankinpolk Center (2 mw6503's with peerless tweeter)
    M10's back surround

    Tempest-X 15" DIY sub w/ Rythmik 350A plate amp
Dayton 12" DVC w/ Rythmik 350a plate amp
    Harman/Kardon AVR-635
    Oppo 981hd
    Denon upconvert DVD player
    Jennings Research (vintage and rare)
    Mit RPTV WS-55513
    Tosh HD-XA1
    B&K AV5000

I don't own the Panasonic, so can't comment on that. I'd say the PS3 is on par with almost any regular upconverting DVD player out there. It's not as good as the A2, but not much else is really.

The PS3 is excellent as an overall player, Blu Ray is spectacular, the media streaming capability is cool, although it has limited support. I don't play games on mine yet, but I'm sure that'll change with time.
