I would like to publicly thank Outlaw --

As most of you know --

My Dad gave me a unit he claimed to have been struck by lightning ---

I contacted Outlaw and they agreed to look at it and fix it (if possible) under warranty..

I sent the unit off to them, they fixed it in roughly 2.5 weeks and sent it back at their cost...

Unit works as promised and does the job ---

I would have no issues recomending Outlaw for Home Theater applications in the future...

Five Stars from Sid! ;)

sweet. That was one of my deciding factors in getting the outlaw990.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks
    Ben

That's a solid response from a mainstream company.

Why do these posts read like sound bites? Do you have a pic?
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Did they by chance say what part(s) were fried? Sounds like a great company that stands by their products.

get that 990 pre map dialed in and let er rip.. upgraded software is free from their website.. it's a must have.

i want to know your thoughts after you get some time with it. I think for a home theater pre amp, it does pretty good in bypass and upsampling mode

Did some general music listening tonight -- stuff I am VERY familiar with...

    Few basic thoughts...

    What a BRIGHT preamp --

Right away, the biggest difference I heard was I was more so listening to the speakers than I was the music -- it sounded artificial, grainy, forward and abrasive... the mids were fairly shouty in comparison to the smooth, yet pronounced Candela sound I am use to -- and the bass was much more present -- something I am no longer use to once I got rid of my old Denon CDP and B&K preamp...

Its just in a different class than my Candela -- different purposes

The Candela is soooo smooth, yet tingly detailed all at the same time, it sounds natural and balanced -- with staging that will just blow your mind...

the Outlaw was as seperated as the Candela, maybe not as much body --- but not as wide...

Just an immediate difference... very easy to pick it out - particularly at higher volumes...

For HT - it will be perfect, loud, bright, authorative bass, exactly what I wanted ---

But I would have a hard time recomending it for a 60% 2 ch, 40% HT rig --

I'm not knocking it, it does good what its supposed to do, but in a 2 ch setup, next to a similarly priced 2 ch only pre -- it is what it is...

I'll let you know about the movie part of it later ---

Worked pretty good with my less revealing Zune running in a dock -- Pretty pleasant

Also -- just a side note

This preamp sounds its best in Bypass, by far --

But on another side note, its very possible my amps and so forth just dont quite mesh with the Outlaw -- which is why I get the real bright sound for 2 ch...

My Dad's isnt nearly as bright

I second what danger boy says, I found the 990 to be a little more layed back compaired to some of the other components I've owned. Different strokes for different fokes I guess. On a second note though, that is the main reason I went with Outlaw gear, very good gear at a very resonable price as well as excellent customer service, looking forward to the next gen. 990 myself, Outlaw can't release it soon enough, glad to see things went so well for you Sid.

It might just be the synergy between the Outlaw and your amps.

But still, the 990 is a great pre.

Yeah, but just to see how it worked... lol

I only have two speakers - not much to calibrate....

Running the Mains on large, no sub or center/surrounds ---- no crossover point...

Stereo, bypass --- Shanling CD player as a source and Zune dock as another...

Nothing in my system really adds or takes away anything - it is what it is... Kind of like with the Shanling v. Rega -- regardless of which player was better, it was very easy to tell which one was playing...

From a Home Theater stand point - I will be very happy.. haha

Oh, okay. But I would be interested in a review of the Outlaw as a stricly Home Theater preamp.

Because I might just be getting an Outlaw in the future...

Sure does sound like they really did you right by fixing it no charge :)

So , no documentation as to what failed ? I have always used individual amps per channel, I wanted to try a multiple channel amp at least once and Outlaw has been at the top of that list after hearing everyone on the boards praising them and your repair for free was just icing on the cake.

All they told me was ---

Some components on the main board had to be replaced...

    So - not sure...
