RTi set-up

I plan on totally revamping my home theater. I currently have an 8 year old Onkyo receiver and Bozos, which I have never really liked but got a good deal on. I plan on using the Pioneer Elite VSX-92TXH, unless people really think it is worth the extra money for the extra 10 watts per channel for the 94. The extra HDMI output really means nothing to me. I plan on getting Polk RTi's, especially with the really good deals that are going on with the older product right now. My plan was to get the RTi 8's (fronts) and get a nice/capable subwoofer. If I go the route of a nice subwoofer, is there and real need to step up to the RTi 10's or 12's? Keep in mind the planned receiver. I would prefer not to get an extra amp. In terms of surround speakers, what would be the pros and cons of getting of getting matching RTi bookshelves versus FXi surrounds. I am planning on the CSi 5 for the center channel.

Thanks,
Kenny

Hi Kenny, welcome to the forum.

I had RTi10's prior to upgrading to the LSi series and loved them. When I initially purchased them, I powered them with a Denon 4306 and all sounded great. I later bought a separate amp and the RTi10's sounded even better. I know you said you would rather not get an amp, but at least pick out a receiver that has external outs. That way if you ever do decide to upgrade down the road, you won't have to buy another Pre. Not knowing your listening preferences or room size, I would go with the RTi10's and the CSi5 will be a perfect match!

As for your surrounds, only the front three need to be matched. You could pick up the FXi’s with no trouble. To answer your question about the Sub, the RTi10's do have a lot of bass especially driven by a good amp, but they will not hit the low frequencies like a good HT sub such as an SVS.

    Good luck!

First off, welcome to the forum! I never completed my RTi (RTi6's)configuration because I upgraded to the Lsi line so I can't exactly comment on the 8's, 10's, or 12's but I too would recommend getting a receiver with pre-outs for an external amplifier when you're ready.

Also, you will be amazed how quickly you run out of HDMI ports.

    Enjoy the forum.

I'm pretty sure that the Elite has pre-outs, and the RTis are a very nice speaker....I would suggest a sub for HT though...

The FXi are voice matched to the RTi, you can use which ever one you like.

Kenny, I added RTi6s and FXi3s within the last month and am very satisfied with the product. Great bang for the buck.

Thanks for all of the input.

If I go with a nice sub, such as one from JL Audio, would that combined with front RTi 8s be enough? Or, would you recommend stepping up to the 10s or even 12s?

My reasoning for the 8s is that my desired receiver, Pioneer Elite VSX-92TXH, could probably push them effeciently, but that anything larger would probably require an external amp. I understand that an external amp would help with all of the speaker combos and that the Pioneer receiver would give me that future flexibility.

I will be sure to give my reviews on whatever receiver and speaker combination I use.

    Thanks again,
    Kenny

A JL F112 or Fathom are great subs, cut the 8s at 60hz and I'd think that would ace the 10s, maybe the 12s too, but it's still subjectively your choice. If you prefer the 10s or 12s now, you're still probably going to with or without the sub.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE
