Would it be a waste of money for me to get a HD DVD player next year seeing as how my TV is only a 720p one? If not, why?

No, it would still be a good idea. I have two 720p/1080i TVs, and they are much improved with my HD-DVD players.

No need to get the latest version players that play 1080p, though, unless you plan to upgrade your tv in the near future.

Best budget player would be the HD-A1, which you can find for a franklin these days. HD-A2 and HD-XA1 are good ones for you as well.

Yes, it's a big improvement in 720p as well. I would say no only if your TV is small. Less or more than 42"?

It would be well worth it. My current TV is 720p and I can see a vast improvement in films on both HD DVD and Blu-ray.

Huge improvement... I will also be surprised if 720p cannot support 1080i, but it's really TV model dependent.

    Denon AVR-X3600H pre/pro
    Outlaw 770 7-channel amplifier

    Samsung DTB-H260F OTA HDTV tuner
    DUAL NHT SubTwo subwoofers
    Oppo BDP-93 Blu-Ray player
    Belkin PF60 Power Center
Harmony 1100 RF remote with RF extender

I have an Olevia (series 2) brand.

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of info on this TV even though this one and my 26" work great with many hours of use on each.

I had a great idea after reading this. I'll change my HDMI output of my "regular" DVD player from 720p to 1080p and see what the pic looks like. So much for that idea. Even though the 1080i was selectable, the 1080p was "ghosted" and not selectable. Is the TV "telling" the DVD player that it can't do it?

You'll see an improvement but I wouldn't rush into HD at any cost. If you can get a player for $100 and you rent movies, why not. It won't be a "religious" experience with that set but an improvement nonetheless.
