Any fellow polkies familiar with the Meridian G55 5 channel amp? I don't see any on the gon or ebay up for sale. I see new list for 5000.00, just curious to find out about its quality and used market price. I am being offered a chance to purchase new for a couple of thousand less.

Had no intention of spending this much for an amp so soon, but if it is really good with that price, could be the only amp I need for a looong time. I see the specs rate 100 8/ 160 4 ohm balanced amp.

One reiview i read said low on power, but sweet on sound. I would much prefer the opinions of real people (like polkies) who may be familiar the with item.

Thanks, Jeff

Though I am not up to speed on the meridian or it's specs,5 large is alot of coin for a 5 channel amp with such low power.Your choices are many in that price range. Many things come into play here, what kind of speakers will you be driving with this amp?How big is your room? You like movies at real load volume? Will you upgrade your speakers down the road?Personally,a 5 channel amp with such low power for 5 g's is gonna be hard to unload down the road without a fairly large loss.Look elsewhere.

    sorry I wasn't clear.

The item was being sold new for 5000.00

I am being offered for 2000.00 new with warranty as this is the last one they have and will no longer carry this line amps or speakers. If the used value is around half the price of new, I may be able to get away unscathed if I find i dont like. No way in hell will i pay 5Gs for an amp, im to small time for that :)

Looks like they have switched to sonus faber as their primary speaker.

Currently, using lsi 9's as mains, definately plan to move up the chain tho. Early 08 is the start of my quest to start building a system, after house purchase.

I agree with the others. You can/should get a lot more power for a 5 channel amp especially since you are driving LSI's for less money. Even with the discount, you are just paying that much because of the name. Not worth it in my opinion.

    How big is your room?

That's a great deal on a top end piece of gear. Given the current slide of the dollar (Meridian is British), it's an even better deal. Now, Meridian is much better known for it's digital gear, but if your room isn't huge this is the last amp you'll need.

BTW- I've actually heard a meridian G56 (the 100 watt, two channel version)- it sounds a lot like a Bryston 3b.
