Any F-Body Owners Here?

Hey guys, long time no see, lol.

Just wondering if there are any f-body owners on here, preferable 4th generation with the LS1. I'm interested in picking one up sometime soon, not too sure when yet, but I'm thinking about it.

Curious to know what your experiences have been with the car. Did you enjoy the car? blah blah blah, lol. What kind of fuel mileage were you getting? I know they aren't the most fuel efficient vehicle money can buy, but I hear they are pretty good on the highway.

So lets see what we got here, lol

Thanks,

Gerry

I'd certainly love to have an F-body at some point. Especially with the LS1!

It's blasphemy to drive a LS1 and worry about fuel mileage! :D

    I have a 98 C5 and am a admin on www.FastLSX.com, which is primarily a F-body message board. I had a F-body, a 94 V6 to be exact. Aside from it being slow(unlike the LS1), it wasn't a bad car.

I've got a 2000 Z28 with a 6 speed. Its bone stock except for the little plug-in that defeats the 1st-to-4th skip shift. I get about 20 mpg average, or a little less if my right foot is heavy. On the highway in sixth (which is a .5 overdrive) the thing idles at about 60mph and 30mpg is doable. I run premium fuel. It's a nice car and has been completely trouble-free for me, though to be fair I don't drive it much. The fourth generation F-bodies are quite a bit more solid than the third gens, IMO.

I previously had a 1997 Z28 which was an LT1 with an auto and the 2.73 rear end. I got 32mpg in that car more than once on a 300 mile round trip. That car had several mods and didn't lack for get-up-and-go either, despite the relatively high gearing. It wasn't as much fun to drive as the LS1/six speed combo though.

The LS1 is rock solid. You can slap on nitrous and not worry about blowing it up.

i had a 98 z28 auto w/2.73s and no t-tops.....i bought it as a 2nd car and as such it was good. mileage - stock, was as good as 31 mpg hwy! then, i got the mod bug:eek:. 1st, i put on a 'lid', supposed to help the intake. then, i took a dremel to the plastic bits around the intake to open ot up a bit. i upgraded the mass airflow gizzie. i then dremelled that, too. you'll need subframe connectors - mkes the car real tight. shock tower brace doesn't do s--t. i put in an exhaust cut out;). and a flowmaster..the real fun started when i put in a 3000 stall speed tourque converter:D w trans cooler;) then, 3.73 gears - hang on!

with all the mods...mileage was still 28 mpg hwy! it was like taking it out of OD with the 2.73s

    performance

    stock....13.9 @ 105.5
    w mods...12.6 @ 110

off the line the ls1 can be a dog off the line compared to the lt1. but hold on to that pedal! after 4500 the ls1 keeps making power, right UP to redline! alot of times going down the 1/4, i kept my foot in it long after. it's intoxicating. the officials don't like that:p

    enjoy

Nice to see everyones feedback so far. And like everyone says, it depends how heavy your right foot is, lol. But that 6th gear sure helps on the highway.

I'm really hoping I can pick one up sometime next year. It's my cousin's fault I'm so determined, lol. He's got a 1998 Z28 with the 6 speed. I've helped him install some suspension mods to tighten the car up, long tube headers, full exhaust... all the goodies, lol. He put a cam in the car not too long ago. The car's just so nice, lol.

    One day...

After one rebuild, I have over 100 low 11 second passes on mine without any problems. You have to find the right person to rebuild them. The T56 isn't indestructible either.

But the 6 speed is more fun, lol. However, I have heard that the automatic can be quite a bit of fun with a good stall.

I went from a 3500 to a 4000 then to a 4400. :D I wish I would have stayed at the 4000 though, anything more becomes sloppy for the street IMO.

I had a 93 Z28 with a 6 speed Lt1 and 98 auto with the Ls1. Both were rock solid performers. Gas milage was shockingly great. Better then my 6 cylinder BMW. If I was to buy aother one I would go for the 6 speed. They also respond well to mods.

There's only a couple of tenths difference between corvettes and f-bodies. Mostly due to weight and aerodynamics.

chevy under rated the HP of the LS1 in the F bodies. they put
out the same as the C5. lots of dyno tests show approx 280 rwhp
for the auto trans and 300 to 310 for the 6 speed. the F body actually
launches better than the vette. the vette has independent rear suspension
and basically has to 'squat' when the power is applied. the f body just hunkers down and boogies:)

I believe you're mistaken. I have never seen a F-body pull a 1.5 60' on a bone stone suspension. Only once you get to highly modded cars(600+rwhp) does the IRS become a achilles. There's a couple of C5's who dipped in the 8's with a stock style suspension(rebuilt rear, different shocks). I want to see a 10 bolt do that. :D

You're correct about the rest though, the F-body was under-rated.

I pulled a 2.0 bone stock, 1.54 with a bone stock suspension and bolt ons, 1.51 with H&C, 1.49 with H&C and QA1's. I added a little more power this spring but haven't been able to make it to the track this fall/winter, and the way things are going, it won't happen till next year. :(
