How hard are these to drive, would like to get my son an amp for his new aquisition, do I need 200 wpc to make them sing or should I buy the amc on the FM.

The larger the SDA the easier (relatively speaking) they are to drive. The AMC would certainly be a great starting point for your son. Let him decide later on down the road if he wants/needs more power.

    I say go for it!

Here we go again with the 200WPC minimum ;)

When I first got my SDA SRS's, I drove them with an Adcom 535 (60 WPC). Was enough. Of course I "had" do upgrade to a 555 :)

The AMC will be more than just ok, meanining you won't really "need" any more, unless you have them in a stadium.

If they are original SRS speakers you can power them with just about any amp capable of running 4 ohm loads but as the manual states to fully hear the dynamic range your speakers can produce they suggest a moderate power amp.

all you need is a high current amp, any flavor you like, something around 25 amperes as a starting point but I suppose the more the better.

Also, your son got the SRS2's, right? Should be easier to drive than the big ones.

I believe the standard is 1000 watts of monoblock power....minimum.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Actually if they are SRS 2's they are a bit of a difficult load compared to reagular SRS's. Still the AMC should be enough for now and probably the future too.

    Sal,

That sounds good, will have the SDA's tomorrow afternoon. I heard a Carver amp at Lou's house when I brought my first ones from him. Hope to hear your set-up soon. Seller told me he is the original owner and the speakers are in mint condition driven with only Mac gear. Selling due to illness, we shall see.

Brought the SDA's home, absolutely in mint condition, original owner driven with a stunning Mac set-up. The guy is retiring and bit sick so he is getting rid of his gear, most of it is spoken for but he said he had some more in a storage. Great guy to deal with, lots of knowledge. Will post pictures when I find my digital camera. They sounded amazing in his house. My son is going to have a ball.

Since there is NO regulated standard for judging amplifier claimed amperage ratings, there's no way to buy an amplifier based on those amperage ratings.

Any quality amplifier can throw incredible amperage output--if you limit the impulse to a short enough time frame. There is no standard for the time duration.

Aragon--just as an example--refuses to specify amperage output except to say that the positive and negative circuit board voltage rails are fused with 8 or 10 amp fuses (depends on the model) on each channel; and so their amplifiers are capable of 16 to 20 amps of continuous AC output. If you ask them what the "peak" or "instantaneous" output is, their standard reply is "Whatever you want it to be."

the SRS's actually can run on very little power. as long as your amp is capable of 4ohm loads. so anything over like 50wpc is ok as long as it's coming from a decent amp. I wouldn't try to run the SRS's with a Yorx component system though.:eek::confused::p

I drive mine with a Carver TFM-35. For loud-normal listening levels it's seeing peaks at 33W/channel. At 110W peaks, it's rocking the house.

I have tested many amps with polk speakers over the years and the Yamaha MX 800/MX1000 are great ones. also the Onkyo M506/M5099 amps can do the job as well. Vintage Sony Servo drive and DBX amps can work well but finding them is a ****. I have a spare MX800 laying around I could probably part with as I prefer the Onkyo amps

I too have tested many amps in SDAs over the years but it wasn't until I got the SRS with 12 drivers in each speaker that I figured out that I needed better amps.

Matt Polk recommends a minimum 1000 watts per side as stated earlier in this thread. You can power them with less but the satisfaction level goes up with every step you get closer to the manufactures suggested power application.

Make sure your amp can drive 4 ohm loads and you should be ok.
