I have been trying to think of the arcade game where you fly the plane at the bottom of the screen, 1-2 player, and you can get different weapons like burst fire, homing missiles and anything in between. Was one of my favorite button mashers.
And it's not Galaga, it's prior to that but very similiar. You had to shoot turrets, other planes, things like that. I was just looking at Galaxian but I still don't think that's it....
Anyone with ideas?

Im pretty sure that's it......it's been so long...anyone know any other games that look like this?
Edit: ok this thread can be closed, i just found more pictures of it....definately the game Xevious...god i miss that game. -
Xevious, totally.
What a great game.Check your lips at the door woman. Shake your hips like battleships. Yeah, all the white girls trip when I sing at Sunday service. -

That's the game I first thought of when you described it. Bandai actually put it on the ps3's ridge racer 7 game to play while you wait for the game to load up. Haven't played it all the way through, but the first few screens play the same as I remember.

I don't think you can get different weapons on Xevious. Just the standard fire and missle. This probably isn't it, but resembles what you are describing. It's called 'Slap Fight' and it's a great game.

I dumped more quarters in that game then Astroids I think. I loved all the hidden stuff that you could find all the time.Testing

Was the game "1942".
I got so good at that on the Nintendo that I could play for ever, the levels just repeated.Testing

If you've got an extra grand lying around, you can plug it into your living room. I've always wanted a game room with stuff like this in the corners. .

That game has good memories for me. It was the summer before my 8th grade on the old Nintendo system. I traveled to my grandparents house for a month during the summer (250 miles away in Yakima).I took my Nintendo with me, it was still the latest gamming system back then. I didnt really know them all that well. My grandpa was about 70 by then and he was a WW2 Vet. He was in the first stages of Parkinsons that within a few years killed him. That game actually interested him greatly and he would play it with me, mainly because it was you know "1942". Was pretty cool, got to know him well. Proof that everyone can play!Testing
