Skating on dead wax

Has anyone experienced a stylus that skates over the dead wax at the beginning of an lp?
I just replaced the Goldring 1022 stylus on my Musichall MMF5-SE with a 1042 replacement stylus. After making sure everything was setup perfectly (tracking force & anti-skate) I thought I was ready to go. When I play an album the stylus skates over the blank grooves at the beginning of the album and does not drop into the groove until the stylus hits an area with music recorded on it. I even disconnected the anti-skate weight and increased the tracking force to max for the 1042 (2g) and the result was the same. Once the stylus is in the groove and playing the sound in fine, no problems from that point on. It almost seems like the stylus is defective but I would imagine these things go thru some pretty strict QC inspections, so I hope thats not the case.
Thanks,
O

It may sound like a foolish question but: Is there in fact a diamond tip on the stylus?

Yeah, the diamond tip is there.

Leveling the table, recheck the anti skate setup and check the down force adjust.
Leveling the table is most likely your problem.

I love how music can brighten up a bad day.
