I used the Denon 5700 for years driving the 1.2tl's. I never felt that the speakers were lacking power as they would play well above the threshhold of comfort, and did so without the amps clipping. That said, I started frequenting this site and decided to jump into separates and bought a used Sunfire sig at 425 watts per. I wasn't sure what to expect in the form of improvement but what immediately struck me was a clearer sound stage and separation. I am no where near an audiophile pro as far as comparing other units but I do know what I hear and what I like.
Additionally while in the HT mode the subtle background sounds were much more defined at lower listening levels. I give high praise to the Denon but I do believe that the Sunfire is at a different level than the 5700.

I'm using 2 Parasounds on our 2.3's...an HCA-1500A on the mids and a HCA-1000A on the tweeters.

These amps. fit my budget, and do a very good job at driving SDA's

SRS 2.3tl's driven by a McIntosh MA6900 integrated. The Mac has "Power Guard" clipping protection, and in my 14x20 room, it never even nips at the protection circuitry, even driven at live volume levels with "aggressive" music.

I'm driving my 2.3s with a new Carver zr1600 class t amp. 360 watts rms of audio nirvana for me. I had an adcom gfa 555II and it was ok. From there I went to a bose 1801. A 250 watt brute and it was much better. Recently I picked up the class t Carver because of some great reviews on it. The new Carver made me realize how good the sda effect is and now I've stopped looking at other amps.

Right now I'm limping by on a HK receiver but tomorrow my Carver AV-705x shows up so hopefully that will perk up the SDA 2's. The HK is struggling a little with the 4 - 5 ohm load but it will make a nice surround processor for a while.

I powered my previous Polk's (2.3tl's) with NAD PE-2200's bridged. A very nice amp but you need the AI cable.

Another dual-Parasound fan here. If I don't find a big damn tube amp next year, I'm gonna try the Halo series, bi-amped as well.

I have a nice Audio Research VS110 that might fit the bill for you Wes :D
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Something like that is certainly what I have in mind. Unfortunately, the key term is next year. :(

I checked the AR website. I guess there is only one source for the 6N1P tubes? I know there's plenty of 6550C's out there if I look.

Butler 2250...250 watts into 8 0hm....400 watts into 4 ohm.
A move from the cinepro 3k6. While the cinepro sure had it's strong points, the Butler has more finesse and detail.More enjoyable on music.

at peak levels? why not? i think they are rated to accept more than that at peak. ken at polk said they have seen this-when you exceed, they shut down via the poly switch. (if you have one). just 'cause i don't have a million posts, don't mean i don't know what i am talkin' about.

Possibly if you were playing Telarc's 1812 and had it at full volume, for a millisecond or two, MAYBE....but still unlikely.

Do the math on the SPL levels and get back to me.

.....a friend is selling his Yamaha MX-1000 in Mint condition. He is retiring and selling off his stored equipment. It has been stored for at least 10 years when he switched over to tubes. I have it now driving a secondary set of Time Window 3's. Never tried it with my SDA crs's.

Minimum RMS output power per channel

    20 Hz ~ 20 KHz
    0.003 % THD at 8 ohms..........260 W
    0.007 % THD at 6 ohms..........295 W
    0.02 % THD at 4 ohms...........330 W

....gets great reviews....he wants $650.00 plus $25.00 for my hassel. No shipping....Live in DC. I get to play with it till it is sold. Love the RED meters.

I drive the SDA-CRS's with a B&K st-140....only 100 watts per....but sounds great in my small living room.

I power my SRS 2's with a Denon POA 2400 (300W per channel into 4 ohms, which the 2's are) through a Yamaha C-2X pre-amp.

I was powering my SRS 2s with an Anthem Amp One(all tube- quad of EL-34s- w/ 40 wpc rms @ 4-8 ohms). It could get loud enough to pressurize a 26x18 room...without a sub in play. It's not about quantity, but quality watts.

    Two Carver TFM-35X's Bi-Amped.

The Power is Amazing, at the highest levels you cannot speak to anybody in the same room. If the person is two feet away you cannot scream loud enough for them to understand what you are saying. I think anything louder than that is just over-kill.

They do have a lot of Head-room. Maybe one day I'd like more head-room, I'd like to play 1812 overture at those levels. I want the digital cannons to knock stuff over and not clip the amps. I will most likely need like 5000 amps. LOL

    Sal
sir, you are absolutey correct. my room is a little larger than yours, and i have only 2.3tl's, but yes, when you cannot understand the person next to you, i think that is loud enough. good quality power is all you need. good sound from low levels to high levels. quality, not quantity.(but the latter is good, too!!)
