Step by Step Improvement to Hi Fi

Gidday - has been a while since I logged in here. My turn to put something back in. Winding back the clock 12 months I started out with a Denon 2106AV AMP, Denon 5 disk CD player, Polk Monitor 60s (part of Polk HT pack), Audioquest type 4 cable. I quickly found my love for good quality sound. So started to carefully improve what I had. A note that with this set-up there was always as small hum in the speakers when nothing was being played.

1. Added an Arcam CD192 - the difference in detail and sound quality was truely stunning. Used audioquest king cobra interconnects. Listened to this for a few months, going through a growing CD collection before adding in the next. Just loved the Arcam.

2. Added a Denon PMA 1500 2 channel AMP - another signifcant step up, bass improved, over all tonal range stepped up.

3. Added a custom build rank - weights heaps, nothing vibrates in it, all the gear is now all nice and tidy. Well thats the way it stayed for about 4 to 5 months. So plenty of time to get use to it all and enjoy.

4. Added in a Belkin PF40 power filter. The improvement was a amazing.. About the same leap going from the Denon 5 disk player to the Arcam. The hum was stillin the speakers, but the clarity and detail just went up to a new level altogether. On the back of this swapped the power cables over on the Amp and Aracam with Audioguest ones - small but noticeable improvement, hum in the speakers gone.

5. Well all the above took about 12 months - so at last it was the speakers to look at. After much reading and listening I replace the Polks with Jamo C805s. They were smaller than the Polks aand fitted better in the room. And the real Woow Hi Fi factor was added to the system - they have turned out to be a perfect blend to the system. The vocals, instruments, background detail just all came pouring out in such realisim it was truely a happy time. Have now rediscovered the CD collection yet again. The one thing the C805's have done is highlight that the Amp is a little lacking in head space if you like the music really loud - but thats not me. At moderate to high levels the Amp handles them well - and Ooh the sound quality.

6. And the very last item - the speaker cables was replaced with QED silver bi wire - I was impressed with the added detail to the bass that this brought. So don't let people tell use the cable dosn't matter. Anyone woudl have picked the difference.

Well that's it for me. The down side for all of this is I am now looking at the rest of the system. But perhaps that a happy story for another time.

Cheers
