The Composite Cable

All of us certainly know the differences between video cables, but I have to think there are thousands of people that use the composite cable that ships in the box with their HD DVD players...merely because it's there. How many non-calibrated players are running out there with a composite cable...makes me throw up a little bit in my mouth.

ignorance is bliss i guess.. the same type of thing where i go over to a friends house with a 50" plasma watching cable over composite (which looks like CRAP on high res lcds or plasma) and he is all proud of himself saying "isnt that picture awsome..its so BIG"..same reason my grandparents bought a 70" lcd projection tv because it is BIG. i am just as big if not a bigger stickler for video as i am audio. most people i know who are "uninformed" about audio/video look at my rti70's and go "wow those are big, they must be awsome" without even giving them a listen..

HD DVD players come with composite cables? Mine came with a cheap component + r/l audio cable (5 connectors), but I use HDMI.

Yup...even my 'new' Toshiba XA2 came with a composite/stereo combo cord. Needless to say, they stayed in the package. ;)

amazing how people spend so much moo laa on their TV's then use inferior cables.. ie: composite video. i had a couple friends over recently, they both have standard def TV's... then they got to look at my HDTV (tube) tv with a program broadcasting in 1080i, and their jaws dropped. Needless to say.. they stayed longer than I had hoped. :p;)
(i don't use composite or s-video anywhere in my system, component or go home) ;)

    A couple of questions folks.
I currently own a Panasonic RP-56 DVDP and am thinking about a Toshiba XA1 as I own a Panasonic 50" plasma (1080i) and have become accustomed to the great pic quality. My current connection is component cables from the DVDP to the plasma and a digital coax to my Proceed Pre.
Can I use the same cable configuration using the Toshiba.

Ok, very silly but simple question. In order to view 720p or 1080i do I need to use a HDMI cable or can I use component cables from the DVDP to the plasma. Thanks.

You can use component to get 1080i from HD-DVD discs using XA1, BUT... This player will only upconvert through HDMI. This means that you will be watching regular DVDs in 480p, not 1080i.

What receiver are you using? In order to get advantage of HD sound from HD-DVDs, you will need a set of analog outs from XA1 to your receiver, unless your receiver has HDMI input.

    Thanks.
I am using a Proceed AVP-S. I assume that using a digital out from the DVDP and letting the Proceed convert to analog will not give me HD sound.
