I know this is a stupid question, but can you play standard DVD's on these or do you HAVE to use HD-DVD's? I realize that the standard will not be in High def.; just wondering if you can even watch a "regular" dvd on these?

You can play standard DVDs, and it actually does a great job of upconverting them.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Yeah, Best buy is going to 'price match'. But mysteriously, none of their stores seem to have them in stock...

Guys if any of you actually manage to snag one of these WITHOUT campinig out in front of the store or standing in line for hours, I'd like to hear about it. I'm gonna go tomorrow after work and see if WM has any, but I fully expect them to be sold out by then. I'd go earlier but have client meetings all day, and ain't skipping on of them to save a hundred bucks on a player...

Sami, does that include the Lewisville area too? I may swing by on the way to work in the morning and see if any are available.

Yep. I'm sure it's the whole USA where it is sold out. (at Best Buy, not Walmart)

I asked the guy that since Roanoake is a 24 hour store and he said they aren't supposed to honor the price until 8AM. Maybe it's worth it to get there and stash one somewhere in the panty bin...

I'm thinking there will not be lines like black Friday. Most people have black Friday off, and there are only a couple of sale items listed for tommorow. There are no sales fliers in the paper like there is for black Friday either.

I have an appointment close to Walmart at 8:30a.m. tommorow, so I will leave a little early and get to Walmart right when they open at 8:00. If they don't have any left, oh well...

    I checked BB's around Texas:

Houston - one place supposedly had some according to website, but I called and they are all out.

    Austin - none

    Dallas - none

CC won't price match even though their warehouse seems to have some inventory.

not to change the subject of this thread but someone correct if i have read wrong. in order to listen in Dolby True HD or DD+ and DTS-HD, you have to either have a receiver that will decode it OR a DVD player that will decode correct? just want to make sure i can acheive this since i have a denon 3802 and would love to have DD true hd

I didn't notice it last night, so maybe they updated it, but the Walmart page now says, "Where available, minimum 10 HD DVD players per store."

The player can decode it, but with the model that is on sale, you need HDMI on the receiver to accept the higher res signals. Other models have 5.1 analog outs that older receivers can use for the new sound formats.

I found 5 in my area.

1 at Walmart. (I just checked at one WM, there is another on the other side of town that might have one but I don't go over there to many weirdos)
1 at Best Buy (open box)
3 at Circuit City (2 new 1 open box and with CC price match plus you can get these for around $90)

I thought about picking one up just for a spare, but I'll probably sit this one out.

Just got home from Wal-Mart in The Colony (TX) and they have a sign in the entrance advertising a "Secret Sale" beginning at 8:00am. It shows the A2, some HD DVD's, and maybe a TV and computer. No prices listed. They don't have any A2's in stock now, but you have to think they will at 8:00 in the morning.

After Christmas they'll be $69, and wont offer the 1080i; it'll all be 1080p. ;)

No, not really, but this is all great news to people like me that are on the fence and waiting for the sub-$100 price point for 1080p.
Do you hear that buzzing noise?

I just checked WM in Grand Prairie after getting off of work. No display, no sign, and a dumb look when I asked about it. I checked for HD DVD's but there were only a few and those few were sitting in a display marked "Blu-ray".

    That was at 1:30AM.
