Arrived today. A visit to Circuit City last week made me realize what HD-DVD picture looked like (no, had never seen it before).

Easy set up, and I slide in 300, which came with the player (Amazon). WTF??? I could swear the standard version looked better!!!! Swap it with The Bourne Identity, also came with the player, and now I can see a difference. Awesome picture (My TV is "only" 1080i, but damn, what a great picture).

I also ordered Planet Earth, and that was what I've been watching for the last hour.

Veredict: with one of the "cheap" players and 1080i, it is well worth it to get into the new formats with HD-DVD. Blockbuster has most of the HD-DVD's (on line rent), so I'll see how much of a wait time I experience.

Not sure what's wrong with 300; anyone also thinks that PQ for this HD movie sucks?

I thought the PQ on 300 standard DVD sucked, but most people liked it.

300 has a lot of grain added to give it a more gritty feel. If you use the PIP feature to see how they filmed it against the blue screen, it is a pretty amazing change.

The HD version of 300 has lots of grain in it. Actually that's how they presented it in the theathers to give the movie that gritty, dirty kind of look. I myself don't like it, but the HDDVD is a true representation of how the movie looked in theathers.

GRAIN and black crush on 300. both intended. watch the pip blue screen deal and you'll see the movie would not have been 'convincing' had they not added both. and btw, hd dvd brings this movie to you in as close to its original glory as one can possibly get. i hated the pq at first. but now i absolutely am in love with it.
