Tell me about THX certified speakers

Be kind... I'm kind of new at this. Is there something really particular to a THX certified speaker, or just a marketing gimmick?

The speaker will meet the criteria established Lucas Labs for sound. There are several levels of rating like Select, Ultra, Ultra 2, etc. mostly dependent upon the cubic space the speaker needs to pressurize at the THX level.
Some Polk Speakers are THX certified some are not, my opinion is you really don't have to worry about it if you are buying Polk Speakers.
On the very down and dirty that is it and opinion vary widely.

THX is marketing, it only serves to put more money in George Lucas's pocket. It will have no effect on sound or performance.

WHAT IS THX?
THX Ltd, is the leading developer of quality assurance programs, services and products for the entertainment and consumer products for the entertainment and consumer electronics industries. THX assures the finest picture and sound quality for cinemas, mixing studios, home theaters, DVDs, multimedia products and automotive luxury vehicles. For nearly two decades, THX has played an integral role in the evolution of audio and video standards; defining optimal performance from the most recognized theater owners, studios and manufacturers. As a result, THX has earned critical acclaim virtually every editorial channel, professional organization and consumer worlwide.
WHAT IS THX CERTIFICATION?
Certified THX products must meet an exclusive set of performance standards established by THX. These THX performance standards were originally developed in response to George Lucas' personal desire to insure that the original Star Wars™ soundtracks, heard in the cinema, matched those created on the sound stage. Later, these standards were extended to encompass Home Theater systems and recently adapted to the specialized needs of multi-channel surround reproduction from movies and games, on DVD, played back on a PC-based multimedia system. All multimedia products seeking THX Certification must meet these rigorous performance requirements and quality standards before they can carry the THX logo which is your guarantee that the THX certified Multimedia product will give you performance and reliability, second-to-none, for years to come. These performance standards cover all aspects of the product including power handling, frequency response, dispersion characteristics and more.
Well, that is the offical explanation anyway... -
Let me add my view on THX. I'll never own anything that has that badge on it, Polk or otherwise.Political Correctness'.........defined

Not something to get wrapped around the axle about.
Oh, and THX certification isn't free, BTW. It makes money for Jorge Lucas et al.

Thank you all for the info. There is something I'm still not sure I understand. My Onkyo AV Receiver (TX-SR875) setup asks whether the subwoofer is THX certified? It would seem to me that some settings within the receiver would change depending whether one answers yes or no?

Check your manual.
My B&K has 2 settings for the sub related to THX.
Mine asks if the Sub is THX Ultra certified, if Yes all the bass is sent to the sub, if no then a high pass x-over at 20hz is turned on.
The other setting adjusts how bass is treated with speakers set to large. On one setting bass from speakers set to large is only reproduced by the speaker, on another setting it is reproduced by the speakers and the sub. -
