Advice Wanted *upgrade rm6750*
Hello everyone,
I decided to sign up here to ask you guys opinion on my future plans of a upgrade. First let me get this out of the way, I am on a very tight budget but my home theater system is my place to get away from life if only for a while so I wanna make the most of it I can. My current set up is as follows;
Polk rm6750 set
Onkyo 705 reciever 7.1
Toshiba hda 35 hd dvd player
Mitsubishi wd65731 DLP
While I love my rm 6750 set I wanna get just a little bit more out of my sound. I wanna replace the center channel and the subwoffer and add two more speakers to complete the 7.1 experience. I gotta do this a piece at the time though. My question is I am planning on getting two M20's to use for the front channels and moving the two from the 6750 set to the rear for the 7.1. Will this be over kill or should i be ok? Basically I just wanna use my current 6750 set for surround and rear. What do you all think of this? Thank you in advance for your advice.

Welcome to CP!! Your plan makes alot of sense. Larger center, mains & sub are always a nice upgrade.

Who are you telling? This all started with the hddvd player, next it was the onkyo and now its this. Eventually ill phase out the rm set to the bedroom but for now ill have to piece it together atleast till after the holidays.
Is there a major difference between the m20 and the monitor 50 speaker. I guess im askin is it worth the price difference? Ive heard the m20 but not the 50.
Thanks for the welcome guys, ive always been a polk fan and ive had great customer service from them.
Oh and where do you all suggest shopping at amazon turned up no m20's and all i have local is cc -
Bad news - I started with the RM-6600 series and a PSW-350 sub. Three and 1/2 years of club polk has brought me to the system I have now.
Decide what you ultimately want to end up with and take your time to get there piece by piece. Any purchase that is made you don't want in your final system is money thrown away. Much better (and cheaper) to take your time and enjoy each upgrade tword your master plan, rather than redo your entire system multiple times in little steps forward.
Welcome to club polk - so if you had a really nice system, what would it consist of?
MichaelMains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms) -

thanks for the welcome. thats a tough question, ive never listened to anything out of my price range. Basically i knew id upgrade the speakers down the road but last feb i saw high def for the first time and as much of a movie fan as i am i had to have it. so i went out and got the tv and a onkyo 604 reciever. the stuff i had b4 that was all old junk that was just about worn out so i had to replace everything. i thought the rm set sounded nice for 299 and in the back of my mind i knew later on it be a good system for a small bedroom. so in a way i kind of stuck to what your saying. i bought the 705 because of the true hd audio decoder plus i thought after set up the 604 was a little weak. other than a flat panel for the bedroom i have no plans of adding anything else, so i thought time to get some good speakers for the main viewing area. I only want to spend about 100 to 200 per speaker and would like to stick to polk. I heard the m20 at cc and was impressed so thats what lead me here.
are you saying i shouldnt get either of the speakers i mentioned above? -
I would avoid the monitor series, and just go straight to the RTI's, or LSI's. You will be much more happy in the end, and won't have to do another upgrade for quite some time.
Welcome to CP
BenPlease. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
Thanks

re you saying i shouldnt get either of the speakers i mentioned above?
Not saying that at all. If you have heard them, like the way they sound, and would like to build a home theater around them, thats exactly what you should get.
I am just suggesting that you look a little above your price range and determine if the increase in sound quality is worth it to you. (it may not be)
When I upgraded from my RM-6600's, I purchased my center channel and a pair of LSi7's that I knew I would eventually use as my back speakers. (during the long wait for funds to materialize, I used RM-6600's as my rear speakers.)
I then got another pair of LSi7's to use as rear speakers running a complete LSi setup using the center and 4 LSi7's. Since I purchased the speakers used, I knew I would be able to sell them for about what I had in them if I decided to get tower speakers for the front channels. (I did) Somwhere along the way I added an SVS subwoofer and my most recent addition was another SVS.
I purchased everything used and took my time waiting for good deals to materialze. It took me over 3 years to get where I am now. There are some great deals on the RTi speakers right now since they are coming out with a new line. (just as an example)
Listen to everything you can in the Polk line as well as a few others available in your area. Decide the sound you like to hear and work from there on getting what you want. The monitor series has a number of good speakers in it. I just do not know if that is the sound you want to end up with. If they are all you have heard - you don't know that either. For now - don't worry so much about budgets, just get your listen on and the deals will come.
Take your time and enjoy the journey. reasearch and make each purchase like it is going to be the last type of that speaker you will purchase. I am not saying you will never uprade from what you get - just that you should not feel you have to upgrade to get a sound you like.

Welcome Crowbar,
I am in the process that you are planning. I started with the RM7300s and RM6901s as rears. Finding out the same, wishing to have better quality sound I embarked on the adventure of upgrading.
Just like McLoki said if you wait around you can get great deals on used speakers and equipment. I picked up my LSi25s for $1000, I would not have been able to afford them at full retail and never thought I would own such a nice pair of speakers anytime soon.
Check out the deals on the Flea Market ... as an example of a pair of nice speakers check out this link

Of course you need to be careful because if you get speakers that can not be run by your reciever/preamp you will be forced to upgrade you reciever or get an additional amplifier, as many people find out So ask questions of the experienced Polk members before embarking on any paths.
Just like someone mentioned; before you pull the trigger on the M20s/50s see if that is where you want your system plans to go as it would be a shame if you came to the same conclusion with the M20s that you did with the RM6600after hearing a RTi series or LSi series speakers.
Good luck.
