My cable modem only has one ethernet port and I don't own a router and don't want to spend $60 just to update the XBOX.
Can one go to the XBOX site and download the firmware updates on dvd and then install the update in the XBOX??
If not, is there any other way of updating, without a router?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Agreed, it's really easy to do. JJamison White -
Well, switching cables can be a PITA. But why not get a cheaper router? This is only one example from newegg for a $23 d-link.

I prefer wireless routers, but for your purposes, a cheap wired router will work just fine. Plus you get an extra layer of security with a firewall for your internet connection. -
I have the same issue.
The 360 is in my son's room, cable cannot reach.
Can the firmware be installed from a disk? Or does it have to be internet connection?Monitor 7b's front

I believe this is what both of you are looking for:

You guys really might want to try xbox live though...multiplayer and all that... -

Jake be very...I mean very careful with that update. In fact I would do the Live update instead.
I know of one person that bricked there 360 using that update. The drive died right after the update started to install itself. Do not know if it was coincidence or not, but it would be easier just to do it via live. -
Yeah..I think I will just move the 360 to the modem, put it on a small tv and do the update there.Monitor 7b's front
