First off it is well known that Dream Theater will be doing another tour in the U.S. this spring. What was a surprise is that Roadrunner records let it leak that DT and Opeth will be touring together for that tour. Here is the link to the thread in the Opeth forum discussing it. And you will also find the link to the roadrunner site talking about it.

Also Opeth is putting out a live CD called the Roundhouse tapes set for release November 20th of this year with the DVD following the first of the year.

Here is the song "When" on youtube that will be shown in the DVD.

That'll be an interesting mix. I know they're all good friends, but touring together, well that'll be interesting.

I happen to like both bands alot, and will love to see them together...

This was unofficially announced on Mike Portnoy's forum a couple weeks back, but it wasn't official. Being a fan of Opeth, and a huge DT fan, I'm very excited for this. That, and on their last tour they didn't come anywhere near where I live right now. By the next one, I'll be in the Los Angeles area...

Absoultely worship DT but cant get into that Opeth thing. Never was a big fan of the synthesized demon vocals. Didnt like it when Napalm Death did it back in the 80's and cant get into it now.

Ive been enjoying the new symhonic metal that Ive recently discovered. Kamelot and Symphony X are taking up most of my listening time.

I understand Mac, it took me a long while to get into Opeth, but now they are one of my favorite bands. The transition between death growls and vocals is so key to what makes this band tick. Plus moving from crunching metal to slow jazz sections is just cool. I am hoping this falls into place and they tour together.

Symphony X? That's a pretty good band. Have you heard their new album?
Speaking of symphonic metal, I've been on a huge Nightwish kick lately. Actually, I just got their 2003 album, Once, as a double LP. It was recorded with a full orchestra in addition to the normal members of the band.

Dont get me started on Nightwish. I accidentally discovered them several years ago under a mislabled download and have loved them ever since so much so that depending on which day you asked me, I might even rank them among my beloved Dream Theater. About half of my alltime favorite songs are from Nightwish.

However that all changed when the beautiful, uber talented and the reason I got interested in them lead singer Tarja Turunen got too popular for the rest of the band so, naturally, they fired her by writing an open letter to the public trashing Tarja as being an ego maniacle ****. Then to top it off, they write a song on the new CD about her being a ****.

And to add further insult to insult they hired a chick that dances around, smiles and winks at the camera. Not very fitting for a heavy metal band. Not to mention her voice. While shes an extremely talented and capable singer she isnt in the same league as Tarja, a classicaly trained soprano. The new chick just doesnt have the power in her voice that Tarja had.

Dont take my word for it, judge for yourself (yes, the videos are stupid, but hey, theyre from Finland).

    Some of Tarja's best work:

    Nemo

    Bless the Child

    Sleeping Sun

And the 2 new videos from the new Nightwish singer, Annette:

    Bye Bye Beautiful

    Amaranth

I do like the new singer but not nearly as much as Tarja and I dont like the music nearly as much as with Tarja. So I will continue to buy Nightwish CD's but I will also mourn the loss of one of my alltime favorite bands and some of my alltime favorite music.

Opeth. Ok, haven't heard of them but if it's that growling stuff, I'll have to miss that part of the show! ;) Now, I'm a HUGE Dream Theater fan on the other hand. I saw them in Austin, TX back in August. Good time...

Yeah, I agree. Tarja Turunen was an incredible singer. The new CD is still pretty good, but not as good as it would have been with her singing. Once is still my favorite album from them.

I had never heard them but watched the videos above and I like it. I think I prefer the first three songs with the original singer but that is only after a quick listen. I may pick up some of there CD's in the next few days.

Pick up "Damnation" it is by far my favorite Opeth album, no growling, very, very mellow, in my opinion one of their best albums. And you can see really how talented they are. I started with that and then moved on to Ghost Reveries. If you listen to Ghost Reveries try "Reverie/Harlequin Forest" first. Very little growling in that song. But you can see how it (the growling) intertwines with the songs. In fact 3 of the 8 songs in Ghost Reveries contain no growling at all.
