Help with Home Theatre Setup
Hi,
I am in the process of setting up a home theatre system.
Here is what am currently looking at
Polk Audio
RTi 10 front
Csi 5 Center
Fxi 3 rear
Subwoofer : Hsuresearch VTF1.
Please provide your feed back, I'd like to use it both for Music and HT (say 50-50%). Its for a media room 15 x 20.
Most importantly am considering Onkyo 605 (rated as 90w/channel 20000Hz - 8ohm 2 channel). It has some raving reviews but I don't know if it can power my configuration. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated

You should be ok on the Onkyo. If nothing else, you could listen to a 2 channel amp and decide if the improvement is worth it to you. (running the rest of the channels from the Onkyo). As long as the 605 has pre-outs for all channels, I think you will be in good shape.
What kind of music do you like to listen to? Have you heard the RTi' s and are you happy with them playing the kind of music you like?
Assuming your room is closed (like a bedroom) and has 8' ceilings you have about 2,400 cubic feet of space to pressurize with HSU's smallest sub. If anything in your plan needs addressed, I would step up to a larger sub or at least e-mail HSU, SVS, or Epik and find out what they recommend for your size room.

Hi sat76, welcome to the forum, come on in and hang out for a while. Looks like you're in pretty good shape but it would be a good idea to make sure you've got pre-outs on your AVR in case you require additional amps (if you should you choose to upgrade speakers for example-or find you require additional amps).
Again, welcome.Home Theater

Thanks McLoki. I checked with Hsu sales person, for upton 3000 sqft ( "Midsize room") they recommend VTF1.
Music - primarily classical, international music, rock -
If HSU said you are good up to 3000cubic ft and the room is not open to other areas of the house - you are good to go there....
Rock will sound great on the RTi's. International I have never heard, so no comment there. You may be dissapointed with Classical on the RTi's. That kind of music is really not their strength, but then again - it may depend on what you are used to listening to it on. (or attending concerts)
Welcome to club polk (sorry I forgot that in the last post) Sounds like you are putting together an excellent system and researching first - both very good signs. Hang around for awhile, we may grow on you. (yes, like a fungus)

When you get that subwoofer (I don't have one) I'd like to know how you went about placing it. Here's a tip that I read the other day from the venerated Paul Barton (of PSB). He recommends placing the subwoofer in the listening position, play some bass heavy music, then crawl around the floor with ears at subwoofer level, listening till you find the spot where you think it sounds best. Then place the subwoofer there. If you want to try this, I'd like to know how it worked out.
