I'm ashamed I haven't been to more of the shops in Seattle. My favorite is Definitive Audio, but they are in Bellevue (15 minutes east of where you'll be staying). There is a shop near the U district with a good roster of manufacturers.
When is your trip? Maybe we can hit up some of the shops together.

I bought my big Parasound from Hawthorne. They double-charged my credit card. Instead of taking the charge off, they sent me a check. Pretty annoying, but I guess it worked out in the end. This was all online, BTW.

There is a Definitve Audio right by Hawthorne. Actually there are quite a few good shops in about a 5 block radius. Check out Definitive. Love that place.
As far as taking an amp on an airplane, and trust me on this one, I'm a pilot. DON'T PUT IT IN THE CARGO (checked baggage). I cannot stress this enough. Unless of course you want to test the warranty and trying to explain to the manufacturer how a bunch of bag-throwing monkies got a hold of it, and why there is mystery goo that smells just like Pert-Plus all over the place. I wouldn't put ANYTHING I valued into the back of a commercial aircraft. By the way the airline will not be responsible for you loss, garaunteed. There are two ways to argue with women. Both of them are wrong. -
Hawthorne is pretty cool...new and used and plenty of it!
Definitive is also in U-district, as is Magnolia, J&S Phonogragh, Precision Audio (more repairs), Music Movies and More (tons of lps).
I work in U-district just blocks away from all these! If you hook up with Shizelbs, let me know, I might be available too. -
HiFi Row? Now I feel even dumber. I going soon for sure.

Couldn't find Music, Movies and More - too generic for a search engine,
might not even be the name...I just know it says that on the sign. it is a "hole-in-the-wall" basement shop on the corner of 45th and Brooklyn (? 1 block down from University).
