Many will suggest to invest in the HD-DVD players. You can get them for a little over 200 doallrs right now. If you are set on an upconverting player, I own the Oppo 981 and love it.

For $200, get the HD-A1 or HD-A2. Upconvert great, plays next gen, and if you get the 5 free HD-DVDs, that's like $100+ in itself.

    For $350, get the HD-XA1.

Unless you are on a strict budget of less than $100, I would suggest going for an HD DVD player. The upconversion of the Toshiba HD DVD players is very nice (on par with the top-of-the-line upconverting DVD players such as the Oppos) and you get HD DVD support to boot. As Andy mentioned, there are still a bunch of retailers offering the 5 free HD DVDs as well with the purchase of a new HD DVD player.

As it sounds like this is going to be your main player for your new Sony XBR TV, you really should won't do it justice with a budget upconverting DVD player. If your budget is under $100, I would recommend saving up to get an HD player.

Go for the HD DVD players and enjoy the upconversion and HD DVD format. That simple.
