you do not have to do a fresh install on a new mobo. you can use the install disk, and do a repair install, but the computer will run like crap. I would do a fresh install. Even if you have an upgrade disk, you can still do this, with out installing an older os. Depending on the age of the upgrade disk at the worst it will ask you to put your old os cd in the cd drive for verification.

What inexpensive cables would you recommend? Cable that would go from a stadard ribbon (HD) to SATA (motherboard)?

Can you even go from ribbon to SATA?

Yes you can, but it's not worth it. I have a SATA 2 drive, hence the SATA connection.

Dude,,I have always had to install my win 98 first then XP upgrade. Are you saying it is not necessary? Can you please explain? That would cut alot of time out of the installation process.

No problem, always good to help out a fellow polkie. BTW, when I upgraded my IDE drives to a SATA motherboard, I just bought a new SATA drive to serve as the boot drive and connected the IDE drives to the IDE connections to be secondary data drives. With SATA drives so cheap with large capacities, it seemed like a no brainer to get the extra performance out of the new interface. IMHO anyways, especially if you're reinstalling windows, there's no reason to keep the old drive as boot...

that works 2, but you will still have to reinstall programs, unless you know your way around the registry. On a fresh install the registry won't show that the programs are there even though they are still on the on the other drive.

When I bought windows Xp, I bought the upgrade, and did the upgrade. I had files get corrupted and had to reinstall. So I took my XP upgrade disk and did a fresh install from it with out any other os on the computer, at some point it asked my for a previous copy of windows for verification. After my upgrade cd blew up in my drive, Microsoft sent me another upgrade cd, which has never asked for an older version of windows.

I just finshed everything. This PC is super fast and quiet.

I had to reformat the drive, XP would not even load. I guess I changed too many peices of hardware. So now I have to start all over..uuugggghhhh

    But it is running great.

The only problem is the start up. The Energy star screan (where it tell you what BIOS version you have and what drives you have) stays up for along time and then the screan goes blank and theres that aggrivating little line at the top left that just blinks for what seems like forever.

I went in to the boot menu and turned the "logo at start" off and enabled "quick boot" , it still does the same thing. Any ideas?

It was running great last night, I dont know what happened......

Calling Geeks.com to see what they can do for me.

I know I bought a cheap PS but GGEEEZZZ, did it have to blow up that fast?

Any recommendations for another one under $50?

I am running 2 HDD's, 2 DVD r's , case fan, Geforce VC, Soundblaster SC and case lights.

So I need something with alot of power plugs.

Good to hear you settled on a solid power supply. It's easy to get drawn in by all the cheap stuff. I usually pay a little more 'cause too many things depend on it. Hope the rest of the build goes well. It usually takes me a day or two just to rebuild the driver/software side of things...

Thanks cheddar, It took me 4 hours to put it all together including software. Then there was the updates. I hope it was a faulty PS and not the motherboard or anything else shorting it out.

Geeks had some PS's, up to $200!!!.  No way Jose. $30 for one seemed just fine.
