Hi folks,

I'm looking to build up my home theatre. I have the Onkyo SR800 htib, and I'm replacing the speakers in phases. My first upgrade was to get two R50's for my current L/R speakers.

I would like to get rti8's for front, around a csi5 center. And the R50's for my surrounds. I listen to a lot of multi-channel music, so timbre matching is important to me.

Does this setup sound decent? I'll eventually get a nice punchy sub, probably not polk though.

Yes, it sounds like a good plan. Future thoughts should be on external amps for the front 3 speakers. The Onkyo is a nice HT reciever but those speakers you are looking at will sound better with external amp on them.

I love how music can brighten up a bad day.

Hey fightingfish, welcome! Hang out and stay a while, and take engtaz at his word, keep external amp(s) on your list. Give SVS a look for subs (http://www.svsound.com/) you can occasionally find some good B-stock deals.

    Good luck and enjoy

Unfortunately, the receiver only has one pre-amp out, for the subwoofer. Wouldn't I need other pre-amp outs for what you suggest?

    Thanks for the warm welcome!

Could anyone help me decipher what my receiver's amp is actually capable of? I'm not really understanding all the technical specs. It says in the manual:

    Rated Output Power (FTC)
110 watts minimum continuous power per channel, 8 ohm loads, 2 channels driven at 1kHz, with a maximum total harmonic distortion of .9%

If I understand this correctly, while running 5 speakers I would be getting minimum 44 watts continuous power per channel.

Also, that max harmonic distortion isn't very good is it? Polk recommends under .5%

You probably are in the neighborhood of correct numbers. Just so long as you know that you will NOT be getting 110wpc for all channels driven together.

Like I said, plan on upgrading the receiver to one that has preouts in the future for amp upgradebility.
