    You can get cheaper if you buy OEM but this came with a simple version of Nero which I use from time to time.

    I've heard some complaints about Lite-On drives and being picky about the brand blank CD's used. Actually, a friend had one and it was picky about reading regular installation CD's.

    Nope, it has read numerous CDs and I burned a DVD the other day with no issues. I used Memorex DVD+R media. I can try a -R once my roommate gets back if you would like.

    My Lite On drive will not burn a Phillips blank CD. It works well with Memorex, Sony, and no-name blanks that I've tried.

    Ok, so now I've got another question. I think I've decided to up it to two 320GB HD's instead of two 250GB HD's. However, I'm not sure which I want.

    Here's three Seagate 320GB HD's from NewEgg; what's the difference?

    I would tell you to buy Western Digital drives. In my 20 years since my first 40 meg drive and tens of thousands since, I’ve had very few problems. However, Maxtor and Seagate have had some serious disasters (any one remember Big Foot?).

    Either way, make sure you use them for raid 1. The best performance boost you can give your PC right now is raiding the hard drives.

    I'm definitely not going to do RAID, at least not now. I'm definitely not that performance-minded. However, it would be awesome to do that at some point in time. But I need more than 320GB of storage space, so I won't be going RAID quite yet.

    I was recently researching this myself, since I am looking to add another HD to help my WD Caviar SE16, so here's what I found if you are still interested.

    Barracuda (7200.10) - mainstream consumer grade
    Barracuda ES - server class product; supposedly more reliable
    SV35.2 - designed for digital video recorders and surveillance systems

    Warranty is the same for all Seagate drives - 5 years and beats the WD 3 year warranty. The Barracuda 7200.10 seems to be a bit faster than Caviar SE16 in general use, but at the same time runs hotter and louder.

    How much louder is the Seagate? Is it really much of an issue? I'm not really harping on a quiet system, here, as it is going to be inside my desk. But I still don't want anything uber loud.

    Price-wise, I'd most definitely rather go with the Barracuda. However, do you think it's worth the extra $10 for that supposed added reliability?

    Well you were absolutly correct. Had it running great last night for about 4 hours shut it down and went to bed. Turned it on this morning and whaaammmoo...Sparks and smoke like the 4th of July.

    I new it was cheap , but not that cheap. The old Dell PS is a better build.

    So I called www.geeks.com , they gave me a credit and I bought this one, per the tech recommendation.


    The biggest problem I have is the power cables....Not enough plugs, I had to "Y" it twice, for 2 HDD's and 2 DVD drives and those cool lights on the case.

    I'm assuming you mean you had to splice wires on your old PSU? I'm not sure that's such a good idea! :eek:

    It's not something we are likely to notice at home - the numbers are within 5-10%, but they did show up in a pure bench test, all other parameters being equal. It would definitely matter had you been building a super cool and quiet HTPC. Check out the "Final Words" page in this LONG test article.

    I was always a WD fan, but I do appreciate the Seagate 5-year warranty.

    The reliability thing should probably not be a factor - we are not buying thousands of disks, and since I am not an expert on the subject, I am leaning towards more mainstream Barracuda or Caviar SE/SE16 lines.

    Take your time...take your shoes AND socks off and touch a bare unpainted part of the case to get your potential the same as your work....esd discharges that you can't even feel can damage components easily.

    Be careful of the standoffs in the case during motherboard installation...traces can be easily damaged ( Dont forget to put your motherboards I/O plate in the case beforehand :) ) Also, some cases come with the standoffs already installed...BE SURE they match your form factor holes exactly...Had one tech at work buy all his parts at Frys...he assembled them and it failed to POST...he brought it into work and had installed all the brass standoffs...one was shorting out the M/B..I removed it and he lucked out...the M/B now POSTed fine ...he was lucky. Other then those precautions the rest is a piece of cake...just be sure to route all of the cables cleanly for both good airflow and good asthetics

    Even though I have built so many PC's....it still is pretty cool starting a new build...being stoked is good !

    Also , beforehand...use another PC to download ALL of the newest drivers for your hardware onto a removable drive...toss the driver cd's that come with the hardware.

    Take pics of your already obsolete before your parts get here PC build...:D

    I had to replace way too many of those OEM cheapo power supplies even before all of these major power hungry video cards hit the market. Even your cheap replacement is WORLDS better then those particular OEM supplies. Using the Y power supply adapters is fine...not a problem

    Installed the new PowMax. What a quiet and cool looking PS. It had plenty of connections. No need for splitters anymore.

    That GFX card is going to be the first thing I upgrade, though it should last me a good year or two (maybe three if I don't get too much into gaming).

    However, take a look at this chart. The 7900GS is actually ranked JUST above the 8600GT.

    I think I'll be happy with the whole system! :)

    Ok, well, my friend came over and we put my computer together last weekend. I've just now gotten around to taking pictures and posting about it. The short of it is....I love it!!!

    So, this is what I ended up with:
    CPU: Q6600 G0/AC Freezer 7 Pro
    MOBO: GIGABYTE P35-DS3R
    RAM: 2GB Patriot DDR2 667
    GFX: PNY GeForce 7900GS 256MB
    PSU: PCP&C Silencer 610
    HD: 2 x Seagate Barracuda 250GB
    Optical Drive: Samsung SH-S203B
    Case: Cooler Master Centurion 5
    Monitor: Samsung 216BW
    Sound: Sennheiser HD590
    Mouse: Logitech G5
    OS: XP Pro

    The install went as smooth as I could have hoped. The CPU cooler gave us a scare as it was very difficult to install, but it's on very solid now.

    After we had it together, she POSTed and installed Windows just fine.

    I'm actually very happy with the case, too. It's HEAVY! That's my only complaint about it. It's very sturdy, plenty of room to work in it, etc. Looks nice enough, too, imo.

    Here are some pics I've taken. The blue cable is the FDD cable, but I've since yanked the floppy drive and replaced it with my card reader.

    I guess I'll let it run for a while longer at stocks speeds, but I can't wait to start OC'ing the CPU, RAM, and GFX card!

    I ran the free version of 3DMark06 and got these results: a 4660.

    I've been playing HL2, BF2, and of course my old Americas Army on it. Very cool! :D
