My receiver doesnot say dolby digital when I use my cable box or hd-dvd player. The only thing I get is pro-logic 2. It is hooked up with a optical cord.

Cable box has to send a DD signal for your AVR to pick it up. Most channels are Stereo, some premium channels and HD channels or in DD.

HD DVD, you might have to set it in the menu of the player or on each DVD.

One last thig is to make sure the input on the AVR is correct. Like my HK, I have to tell the AVR what input to use and which audio to use, especially if I have analog (RCA) cable and optical or coax digital also, hooked to the same input.

On my DVD connection I have coax (digital) and analog (RCA), I switch from 2 channel to DD often. So when I want to listen to 2 channel, I have to set my AVR to the same DVD input but to RCA audio input.

Is your cable box hooked up via optical cable? and is it one that can view high definition programming? if not. if it's just your standard definition cable box... then even using an optical cable will only give you pro logic sound.

as for your HD DVD player.. that's a whole other thing. Probably a setting somewhere in your DVD player or receiver menu.

probably a stupid question to ask, but you mention one single optical cable, and replacing your TV and your Receiver. What is your optical cable connected to? Are you just running it from the TV itself to the receiver?

Make sure the hd dvd player digital output is set to bitstream.
