Questions about rti6/rti8
Hello all from a newbie,
This is my first post and I have been reading stuff in this forum for the past 4 hours. Learning so much! thanks for all the knowledge. I found some rti8 floor models for $350 pair. Also considering rti6 floor models for 270 pair. I originally wanted bookshelves but I feel this deal on the rti8 is too good to pass up. I listen to a lot of reggae and hip-hop so I think that bass is pretty important (another reason I'm starting to lean towards rti8s).
Any reccomendations?
Second part of this question has to do with the receiver that i already own. My Onkyo tx-8511 has already blown 3 sets of old/cheap speakers.
Its specs include: # 100 Watts/Channel, 0.08% THD
# Discrete Output Stage Circuitry
# True High-Current, Low Impedance Drive
# Multi-room Capability
# 4 Audio and 2 AV Inputs
# Video-1 to Video-2 Dubbing
# RI Compatible Full-Featured Remote Control
DOESNT HAVE SUB OUTS!
Im wondering if it will work well with both rti6 and rti8. And if there is anyway to increase the performance while i save up for a better receiver.
sorry for the long post and thank you for your help.:)

I just bought the Rti8's a few days ago, haven't hooked them up yet. $350 for a pair is a great deal. Mind sending me a PM to tell me where, since I paid a lot more. I've heard nothing but good things about them so I'd say get them at that great price.

Welcome to CP Jmac.
FYI, most speakers get blown from pushing the receiver too hard by playing it too loud. It is trying to go past it's limits & clipping & distorting, which can lead to fried speakers.
If you are turning your volume past the half way point, you are asking for trouble.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
If you've blown three sets of speakers already, then it's most likely you are driving the amp into clipping--which will kill any speakers.
I would suggest you modify your approach. If you want the RTi8s, then get a sub too. Many subs can take the signal off the speaker wires, so you don't need a sub out on the amp. That will get you the bass you want (assuming you buy a big enough sub w/ a big enough plate amp in it.) By using the speaker wire inputs, most subs "shape" the signal going on to the speakers w/ a 6dB/octave filter at 120 Hz. That takes a bit of load off the speakers and may help w/ integrating the sub w/ the speakers. But you still have to watch your volume levels to avoid clipping! To get more volume, get more amp. And remember that to double the volume requires TEN times the power. Which translates to a BIG amp at a fairly high price.
Alternative is to look into speakers w/ very high sensitivity. I think the RTis are about 89 dB. Look for something in the range of 96 to 100 dB. But I suspect you won't like the price or the size--both probably larger than you want to go.
Quality sound at high volume = big $$. No way around it. (Although costs can be reduced by buying used gear.)

Forgot to add:
Warning: Excessive SPLs can cause permanent hearing loss, which impares ability to enjoy music!

jmac, welcome.. some good advice already.. think about just adding a two channel amp to your current receiver if it has pre amp outputs.. that would keep you from having to purchase a new receiver.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Excellent deal on the 8's but you could probably do better on the 6's. I love the way mine sound with an amp running the fronts and the AVR handling the rears. Adding the amp really helped because now I don't have to push my AVR to make me happy with the way my speaks sound.
