WTF

The last mission is to just drive a Warthog around dodging holes then you jump onto the ship for a cinematic sequence where you almost fall out, claw your way up to safety. Then we learn that you died anyway, presumably from the energy wave coming up from the explosion.

That effing sucked.

Grrrr... There's another sequence AFTER the credits that explains it further.

Crap, I didn't watch the other sequence.

i dont think he died, i think they pulled one of those "pretend i died so i can live my own life" kind of deals. I still thought the ending sucked as well. The story never made any sense to me (granted i didnt play halo2), but they didnt really explain anything, they just had random cut scenes occassionally. Why did we go in that random portal anyway? i thought we had to save earth, did we kill all the flood on earth? i thought high charity flew to earth, apparently it didnt...

Lots of plot holes in my eyes, but maybe i'm a dumbass. I wouldnt even care really, but a bunch of the programmer/developer guys made a big deal about how they took a bunch of extra time to make the story awesome for halo3. Mayhap they should have taken some more time...

He didn't die, you have to watch the cinematic sequence that is after the credits. I missed this at first (hence my initial angry post) and I pushed the button while the credits were scrolling so I didn't see it.

They went into the portal because the Ark set off the Halos --- but they learned that if they all fired, Earth was out of the firing range --

Therefore if they set off the ark, it would remove all flood traces and save earth.

Thats why they went through the portal to destroy the ark...

    Makes perfect sense

and as said above --- MC didnt die... the ship broke in half going back into the portal

There's a second video after the credits if you beat it on Legendary. It's short, and mildly vague, but kinda neat.
