It's time for me to do some upgrading on the T/T front and I was wondering if any of you use, of have used, or have heard of the NAD C555 turntable. I've read that it's similar to a Rega Planar Two but the NAD uses some type of non resonant MDF for the platter whereas the Rega is the glass platter. The NAD "retails" for $600 new but let's just say (for the sake of argument) that I can get one for "very" reasonable as I know someone at NAD. It would have to be a major step up for me over my old JVC QL-F4 quartz T/T with the Shure M97 cartridge. Not that it doesn't sound good, but I think it's time for a step up in the analog world since I'm approaching 700+ albums.

Thoughts, opinions and criticisms are all welcome! :D

I'd save your dough until you can really step it up to something around the $700-1000 level in a used VPI or similar quality table.

The NAD is a rebranded rega p1, if I am not mistaken. As in, put a halfway decent cartridge in there, and it should sound pretty good. There are also glass platter upgrades for it, that you should consider.

    I believe the 533 is a P1.

I wish I could afford to go to something like that in a TT right now but I was thinking that for what I can get the C555 for, it would be a major leap over my old JVC. For what I can get it for, I can do an upgraded platter sometime soon and get a better cartridge setup on it.

I did get an email back from my buddy at NAD and it is a rebadged Planar 2.

Then there you go... I would say go for it, my friend. The p2 is a fine TT, and as good a way as any to get into serious listening with vinyl.

I have had my eye on the NAD table for a while... I see them pop up on ebay every now and again. It's always cool to find parts that match your other equipment (in my case, my NAD integrated and seperate phono stage).

My point is that it might not be as "major" a leap as you would hope. You might be better off just getting a better cart, a clamp, and possibly a better mat for your current TT. Then save up.

I've just seen it too many times, including myself. 5 turntables later and I'm very happy with my VPI/Sumiko combo. My brother gave me the same advice that I gave you, but I ignored it.
