My 3 week old Onkyo 805 just fried

Holy ****! My 805 JUST fried about 15 minutes ago!

3ish weeks old!

I’ve run it on my HT upstairs since I got it. Full pre-out to Outlaws Using AC3 digital (no HDMI).

So I moved it down to my new HT room. Took down my PS3, took down my fronts only (Polk Rti12) and took down my sub.

Plugged them up. RTI12's right into the Onkyos onboard amp (not preamped). Plugged the sub in (sub out) plugged my new 1080P projector in via HDMI.

So this was the first time I used HDMI and the onboard amp.

I spent some time just listening to the radio while I worked down there... not all that loud. Then I played a quick 15 minute game. Then I fired it up a bit (20 registered on the oem knob) and listened to 3 Songs...

In the middle of "don’t stand so close to me" by the Police... I heard a POP... all music ended and the 805 sat their flashing a red light. Kind of amazed I let it sit there for a minute while I turned the differnt things I had in the area off, walked over and hit the power button... nothing except another pop and a big old poof of smoke....

At least your still in the 30 day return policy of most stores. Did you buy it somewhere that will let you return it without hassle?

And I just bought an Onkyo pre-amp.:eek: :eek:

I have never owned an Onkyo product, but I would say you are still within your warranty / Return policy


It`s still a bummer that it smoked itself though

I would say that trying to drive the RTi12's was just too much for the poor thing

It was just defective. Most items, if they are going to break, go bad in the first few weeks.

The potential fire hazard sounds worse than I thought it might. Wouldn't be surprised if there's a recall forced on Onkyo for this. Receivers should be designed to cut power if there's an internal fault and not start up again until the fault is corrected, not power back up and continue to run until a component burns up inside.

The onkyos I have known were built like tanks. That being assumed, it sounds like you just put too large a load on that receiver. Return it. Get your money back. Then go buy a used multi-channel amp and controller on audiogon. You will be much happier. I went through this same upgrade process over a year ago.

Don’t forget guys that I have been running an Onkyo 800 for a good 5 years without a single problem In fact, Im going to have to move it down there if I dont get the 805 fast.


I think the thing was flawed. Even using all preamps (and no video proc's), I noted (on the AVS forums) like a week ago that the thing ran so hot it was hard to touch, I didn’t think much of it because a lot of other people were saying it was running hot. Maybe mine was worse. I dunno, I really haven’t run it much at all. I probably had 5 hours on it.

Before I bought my Outlaws, I ran the 800 on the Rti12's for some time and it ran them great with less power than the 805. With the 805 I was thinking of running the bottom on the Outlaw and the top on the stock 805.


I just got a bad unit. I’m gonna drag the thing to CC and try to get a direct swap. I don’t have the box because I bought it with my HT built and had a million boxes that had to be tossed (15+).

When I get the new one, I’m gonna run the thing for 8+ hours at low to mid range. I’m also gonna ask if I can buy the 5 year friggen plan on it.

Took it into CC this morning, got a replacement on the fly, also picked up a 5 year extended war for $79. Plugged it in and fired it up. Working great. I put a small fan on top which is having an amazing effect on keeping it cold. Fan is annoying though, would prefer not to have that running during a movie. This time I moved 2 of my monoblocks down for preamp and they Outlaws are running cool like usual.

Anything electronic can break. It doesn't matter what it is. If it has electronic parts in it and voltage is applied to it, it's just something that inevitably happens. It could have been any brand that did that...Denon, Marantz, Pioneer, Sony, Rotel, Mac, Sunfire, etc, etc. I've ran Integra/Onkyo stuff for the last 6 years and, even though I'm a rep for those 2 lines, I still think they are built very well as are the many other lines that are out there.

I'm glad CC got you fixed up on that unit and there's nothing wrong with getting the service plan on it, either. Just one more bit of insurance.

If it is a 12v fan, try running it off a 6v power source. I have a fan in the top of my rack, run at 6v, and I can't hear it from more than 1 foot away.

ya, it pretty small but its a metal fan, I think Ill give it a squirt of WD40 and see how it sounds. I've been running the Onkyo 7 strait hours now... Most of it the Seahawk ownage game.. well worth it
The Onkyo with the fan is ice cool.

For both of my Onkyo's I used a 120mm Stealth fan mounted on the inside of the top cover with rubber mounts ( Both the rubber mounts and the fan came from the PC side of my hobbies ) ....have a very small 9 volt dc supply that originally came from a Netgear router to use with it ( I tried from 5 volt to 12 volt supplies...anything under 7 volts didnt provide enough air flow with the Stealth fan...anything over 9 volts and the fan was audible...the 9 volt supply was a perfect compromise for extreme low noise and good flow ) .

I ran the internal fan wires out of the cover through a rubber grommet...terminated the connection flush with a female PC power supply connector. This left the Onkyo looking factory fresh except for this female connector available . Then I took the Netgear 9 volt supply...cut the long output wires to about 10 inches ...then terminated them with a male PC power connector. The setup looks as stealth as the stealth fan sounds....and runs ice cold.

Good idea. My first Onkyo TX-SR702 got so hot that it could fry eggs on top of the unit. The second one that I exchanged for didn't get as hot, but still needs a fan or two to keep cool.

I had to return my AVR due to overheating problems cutting out the sound...when I got my new unit, I bought this as well:

This is for reference only...I went to the Cool Component site directly...and paid about 20-25 less. The nice thing is that you can vary the voltage on the power supply.

I didn't think twice about replacing my first Onkyo dolby surround unit with another Onkyo when DD came out. 6 months later it died and could not be diagnosed according to factory authorized service reps. No financial loss due to store credit (I turned a reciever into a headboard and a DVD player), but I still couldn't help wondering if quality control had declined from early/mid 90's to 2001. Or maybe it's just chance. I dunno.

BTW-I gave the old pro-logic unit to my neighbor who is still using it to power the jukebox in his 10,000 sq. ft. pool hall.
