Good CD Ripping Program

What's a good program for ripping CD's into MP3's? I know EAC is awesome, and that you can use LAME or something in conjunction, but I don't think I'm savvy enough to set all that up. Is there something else that works great, fast, easily?

I have to re-rip ALL my CD's for my iPod, and iTunes just takes FOREVER.

Thanks!

Dangit. I'm aggrivated. I downloaded Lame 3.97, but I can NOT find a .exe file anywhere for it to link EAC to.

Did you try doing a search for it with the Windows search utility? If you can't find it, I will zip up the installation and send it to you. The installation of EAC and Accurate rip are in a self contained directory. Now the trick is how I get an 8mb zip file to you?

My yahoo account will send 20mb e-mails but you have to be able to receive it. PM me your e-mail and we’ll give it a try if you are unable to find the lame.exe

I would LOVE it if you'd send me a .zip of your file. There is no .exe file. It's not that I can't find it...it's not there. I've searched through all the files. There's one readme talking about creating .exe's as well as other files...yeah, I can't do that.

When following the directions, Step #8 is where you will choose either FLAC or LAME as your compression utility. His instructions are for using FLAC. If you want a smaller file size (At the same time sacrificing a little quality) choose LAME.

Here is the site for downloading the latest version of Lame

I have attached a screen shot of step 8 when using LAME instead of FLAC. Also, the command line is not complete in the screen shot so here it is...

Ahh, don't worry about Accurate Rip. It's a part of EAC, now. I just ripped my first CD, and Accurate Rip popped up automatically.

Yeah, just hit MP3. I have EAC set to ASK me where to put the files it rips. I then tell it to put them IN my iTunes folder (of course that I'm keeping organized according to Artist/Album).

I'm not sure how iTunes will handle FLAC. But your iPod won't, I'm pretty sure. That's why I'm using LAME to convert to MP3.

Hmmmm. So maybe I should save it elsewhere? It's eventually going to go on the Squeezebox but I don't want to mix it up if the ipod won't play it.

Edit: I notice that even though I am saving it to my iTunes folder, iTunes is not popping up..?

What do you mean iTunes is not popping up? I don't think it should automatically open. But if you open iTunes yourself, is the music you just ripped there? I actually haven't looked for that yet...will go do so now...

Ok, iTunes doesn't automatically recognize the music and add it just because it's in the same file. So, I've moved all my ripped music to its own file (organized how I want it), and then go to File -> Add Folder to Library in iTunes and just add the music that way. Works great.

    Bingo !

I do the same thing. I keep two separate music directories; one for iTunes and one for playing on my rig. Pain in the neck, but a simple directory compare utility will keep both folders in sync.

I have noticed that while music ripped by EAC sounds great on my rig at home, some material sounds like **** on the iPod…. Hmmmmm.

tryrrthg - Check you EAC Options and make sure your Compression and Extraction priority is set to 'HIGH'

It should not be taking that long. I have 3 machines that I can extract on. The slowest is an older Athlon 2600XP machine with a bunch of software on it which means a lot of background services running and chewing up memory. The Athlon machine only takes about a minute or 2 to create all the .WAV files. Converting the .WAV to .mp3 using LAME takes about 6 minutes on the slowest machine and about 3 minutes on my faster machines.

If the options are set to HIGH, try turning off your anti-virus program and see how long it takes. Not sure if that will make a difference but older versions of Norton use to muck my system up and make it really slow so now I use other programs.

My home brew audio server does a FLAC in about 12 minutes with no uglies.
Errors slow it way down. Most of my cd's are in good to great shape.
It's the really old ones (cd fadeout????) that are killing me.
Some can't be ripped. No scrathes or smudges, just won't read well.

I think I got it figured out last night. there were a few things that I managed to mess up in the setup. I guess that's what I get for skimming the setup directions and not reading more carefully...

The only problem I'm having now is I get reported errors on the last part of the last song. So I uncheck "Overread into Lead-in and Lead-out" like the directions say to. Then it works fine but I no longer get any results from accurate rip. I didn't have a lot of time to mess around with it last night so I will have to check the last track to see if there are actually errors there or not...

    Thanks for the help!

I used the instructions at www.bestMP3guide.com with the Lame 3.90.3 version. I can only rip the CD into WAV files, not MP3 files. What did I do wrong?

I then used the instructions posted by m00npie. However, I can't locate the lame.exe file. M00npie, I pm you for help.

Sweet. I finally found this thread. Had to search a few times to get it...

So, I finally ripped ALL our CD's to my new computer. Woohoo! ~140GB in .WAV. However, I also had EAC convert them to 320kbps MP3's, too. So, I have a folder with wav's and a folder with MP3's. While I was ripping, I noticed the MP3's weren't taking up as much space as I had thought they would...interesting.

I was looking at some of my MP3's, right clicked, properties....180kbps....what?! Went into EAC, compression options, and here are the options:

    %l-V 5%l%h-V 2%h --vbr-new %s %d

I'm assuming that 'vbr' means variable bit rate. I did NOT want that! I'm SERIOUSLY thinking about re-converting all my .WAV files to standard 320kbps files. However, how would I do that? Can I just remove the vbr from that list and go at it?

    Thanks!

Simple question. If you had a cool million bucks, what would you do with it?
