It has to see a LAN connection for a firmware upgrade? I thought a lot of them just flashed the memory via a CD or DVD-ROM disc. I could be wrong as I know nothing about that unit. Otherwise, you would need a 2 or 4-hub router.

Could you download the update to your computer, store it on your hard drive or burn it to a disc, disconnect from the internet, connect the Toshiba, and install the update?

Here's what I see on their website. If you have a CD or DVD burner, it looks like you may be able to put the file on there. The direct LAN connection is cool if you have a router...takes about 20 minutes it says.

No media means you have no disc in the drive. You did put a blank disc in your CD burner right?

Have your burned Cd's before? If not you may not have a burner at all.

Or your burner can't handle the CD format you are using. Try a smaller volume CD and see if it works.

If CD-RW works, CD-R should work. RW is just re-writable.

Do you ahve any other program you could use to do the burning?

The other option is to send away to Toshiba for an update on CD. It takes a little longer, but this doesn't appear to be flying along either.

Can't you hook up your ethernet connection directly to the HD-A20? I believe I hooked mine directly to the moden, and it worked fine.

That's what I was thinking. Just take the player close to the PC and unhook the ethernet connection from the PC and hook it to the DVD player. It's only supposed to take 20 minutes or so. You don't have to be on the PC for the update to do its thing.

Here's exactly what the website says about the ethernet connection...

How to obtain and install the firmware update:

              1. If you have broadband internet service, you may obtain the firmware update over the internet using the Ethernet port on the back of your HD DVD Player. Instructions for configuring the Ethernet port and downloading the firmware update can be found in the owner's manual and Update Procedure sheet for your HD DVD Player. Here is an overview of the process:

              * BEFORE BEGINNING THE FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCESS, BE SURE TO REMOVE ANY DISCS FROM YOUR HD DVD PLAYER.
              * Please configure the Ethernet port. You may need to turn on DHCP and DNS.
              * After you have configured the Ethernet port, follow the directions in the owner’s manual to check for a firmware update.
              * If a firmware update is available for your player, it will take about 20 minutes to download and install.

              Once the firmware update download process has finished;

              1. A message will appear, and the firmware update will automatically start.
              2. When the firmware update is completed, the player will automatically turn itself off.

The directions say to look in your owners manual. THAT's where the directions are. The player will tell you on it's screen what's going on. It might work like that, it might not. It's just an idea. But look in the owners manual!

                  Um... what?

The internet connection is currently connected to your PC.

It needs to be connected to your HD-DVD player.

You will know how it's progressing because you ahve to have some sort of display hooked up to the DVD player. Your PC has NOTHING to do with it. You don't even NEED a PC for that part to work. The HD-DVD player IS the PC in this example.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

are you talking about a regular phone jack instead of an ethernet jack? the two look similar but you want to use the bigger one for your a20. do you have comcast high-speed internet, or slow internet through the phone line? i didn't know comcast offers dial-up.

anyway, i hope you mean you have high-speed internet and it uses the larger ethernet plug. just take your a20 over to your internet connection and hook it up to a small tv so you can confirm the a20 is progressing. don't worry, the a20 will go to the correct website on its own, so you don't need the pc at all, only an internet connection. but be sure you can see the progress of the update on your screen. you DO NOT want to turn off the a20 in the middle of downloading the firmware!

How do you have this connected? Do you have a home router at all? If not get one. I don't know how this firmware update works, but I do work in IT and know a thing or 2 about networking. If you give me some more details I might be able to help you. You have to transfer a file from your pc to your player? Seems like a funny way to implement a firmware update using ethernet, they could have designed it so you just burn an image to a cd. If the player has an ethernet port can it stream from a server?
