Allison One Speakers

Well, I just looked at a pair of Allison One speakers locally here on the Cape. Guy had advertised them as "best offer". Hadn't used them in years and hadn't inspected them either. Well you know where this is going.... Woofer surrounds totally gone. Most of the small paper cone tweeters were dented as were the mid range drivers. Grills OK at best. Cabinets actually pretty nice.
Oh well, I said I'd take them for $50 as is (not that I want to put much time and $ into them either) but he didn't bite. Not sure he'll get anyone to invest in the restoration of their drivers (there are four of everything).
Damn shame. These are wonderful speakers. I have a pair of Fours that I have owned for 30+ years.

Allison drivers are available again for purchase. Almost every one I've seen for
sale needs speaker refoaming."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -

Thanks for the links but, hmmm...
Woofers trashed, the tweeters and mids may not be but if we assume all should be replaced, lets do the math:
Woofers 4@$128=$512
Mids 4@$80= $320
Tweets 4@$65= $260
Total: $1,092
and haven't checked crossovers or replaced the front grills.
I like these speakers a lot but not that much. -
They are excellent speakers. The woofers aren't hard to refoam if they are intact. Dented domes won't have sonic sonic consequences. The grilles are extremely brittle and fragile at this late date.
Allison is AFAIK defunct again (even though they still have a functioning website). At least, they never responded to my e-mails.
I found my pair at the dump... -
Those in that condition, will still bring a couple hundred on eBay. I would wait him out, pick them up and restore the old drivers instead of replacing them.HT Optoma HD25 LV on 80" DIY Screen, Anthem MRX 300 Receiver, Pioneer Elite BDP 51FD Polk CS350LS, Polk SDA1C, Polk FX300, Polk RT55, Dual EBS Adire Shiva 320watt tuned to 17hz, ICs-DIY Twisted Prs, Speaker-Raymond Cable

That was kind of my plan but don't know what he might drop down to. I also have no interest in shipping these. If I picked them up for next to nothing i would probably refoam the woofers and hope for the best. -
Capecodder, I have a set of circa 1978 Allison Ones that are in recoverable shape... The woofers have no surrounds, and one has a small tear in the cone, but new surrounds and dust caps would bring them back to about 95% condition or better. The mids and tweets look fine - one mid has some scuffing on the foam surround but that is purely cosmetic. Grilles are great. Cabinets are worn, but no heavy scratches - they could easily be refinished to 90% condition.
I know very little about these, or about speakers in general, but will do my best to answer any questions you may have if you are interested. I will post them on eBay soon, after I get done doing a thorough cleaning...
