I was told that it was ok to power a higher ohm speaker with a lower load say 4 ohm:confused? Anyone know if that is true?

True a speaker at 8 ohm can be powered by a receiver which can power down to 4 ohms. In fact you could power 2 8ohm speakers on a 4 ohm receiver if you wished.

You just can't go the other way use a 4 ohm speaker with a 8 ohm amp / receiver. The lower of a speaker ohm the harder it is to move the speaker.

If there is a switch on the back of your AVR for 4 or 8 ohm, all it does is limit the amount of current your AVR can put out so as not to damage it with low resistance speakers. 8 ohm speakers will work when the reciever is set at 4 ohms but not sound their best.

Basically I would always run the AVR at 8 ohms and if you have any issues (AVR gets to hot or shuts down) get an external amp for your 4 ohm speakers.
