hey guys, this newby needs some info and advise. Okay currently i have a Panasonic SC-HT900 5.1 hometheater system. Here's a weblink to what it looks like:

http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vModelDetail?storeId=15001&catalogId=13401&itemId=64104&catGroupId=25011&modelNo=SC-HT900&cacheProgram=11002&cachePartner=7000000000000005702

I bought it a couple of years ago at best buy. Its one of those setup were its a 5 disk DVD player, and reciever in one. Actually the the DVD player hooks up to the subwoofer were the rest of the speakers hook up to. It's a 1000 watt total system. It suits me for watching my movies. Now my overall plan is to slowing upgrade this whole system. currently I bought a C150 center channel from 1995 i found at a pawn shop for $30 and its now my new center channel speaker. I also have a pair of Vintage montior 5jr bookshelf speakers i found at a pawn shop and will getting them friday to replace the front surround speakers that came with the setup. When christmas comes i hope to buy some of the R50's to replace those and move the Monitor5jr as the rear surround speakers.

Now my roomate has been telling me about when you get speakers make sure they are ones that will not fry you reciever. Something about the ohm's being to low and distortion, total Harmonics and stuff like that. I want to make sure I'm getting speakers that will work okay with the current reciever untill i buy a new one sometime next year. I'm just not sure what all the lingo means. Can someone point me to a weblink or something that explains everything i need to know about buying the right speakers and this and that.

I'll post the info thats in my Manual for the current reciever I'm using plus the speakers I've already replaced for the new center and front ones in hopes that they are compatible or at least won't destroy the reciever untill i buy a new one when ever. But i guess the most important thing is learning the lingo so i can make good buying choices in the future.

Here's the specs the current system according to the manual:

Panasonic SC-Ht900 Hometheater Specs:

The specs are typical of all-in-one home theater systems. Adequate for bedrooms and small living areas at lower volumes. Any Polks will be an upgrade over the systems speakers, but will still be limited to lower volume usage due to the amplifiers capabilities.

Upgrading power to a better receiver/amp will be needed to get the most out of your new Polks.
