What a wakeup call! I went with a friend to see if a used projector he was looking at was worth while.

It was a Barco Graphics 801. High definition, RGB, s-video and computer input.

10 feet of the best looking video I have ever seen in my life. All computer controlled setup. Easy to use. Professional quality. $22,000 new. 3 CRT's. This one was reconditioned. Somewhat of a warranty but who knows.

Cost: $1000

Uneffin believable!!! He had two. My friend walked out with one and so did I!!!

$2000 to $8000 for a high def rear projector? I don't think so. What a waste of cash that would be. I know the economy is down but this style and class of projector for $1000 is rediculus. Almost downright stealing!

Alternatives for the same price: 32 inch flat screen with pic in pic, standard definition. Not even close!

There were several on ebay. Non of them seem to be selling this month for some reason. Probably economy, possible war, shooting sprees etc. Normally they seem to get whatever they want for them.

    Thanks Ron.
As the guy was dialling in the setup (which is extensive) I was thinking of you and when you had your set tweaked. I forget the name of the process. Of course I have to do the whole thing over once I get it in my house. I'll have to find a screen to go with it at some point. My present one just shines on the white wall but I think this one deserves a screen.

I need to sell my Infocus dragonfly and get a real HT projector. How do you like the Barco?

I can't give good advise because I just got it home. I saw during the demo that it had a great high def pic and many abilities for storing multiple setups. Setting the thing up for any particular source looks easy (all on screen and menu driven). It seemed to tuck up in the ceiling easily but it is huge. Approx 22"W X 36"L X 14" and weighs 130 lbs. (three times bigger than my old Panasonic CRT projector). CRT's appear to give a better pic than DLP's, LCD's etc. at least that I've seen. The case design seems very durable. Also all the electronics are plug in boards which would make it easy to fix and there should be a lot of old working boards floating around. It looks to be a top notch projector.

Nice to see some stepping into the FP club. There are many reconditioned OLD crt projectors to be had. Never really know what to expect/getting though. Believe me non crt projectors have come along way and are drasticly improving by the minute. For me a FP is what really makes a HomeTheater. Playing my PS2 on mine is just too much fun. How are you actually seeing High Definition though? Only limited satilite broadcast and a $700 reciever is basicly the only way right now. Maybe that new DVHS format. I would love to see HD image on mine. Video essentials have been working on an HD setup disc for over a year now. They have not been satisfied with the quality yet.

Are you saying only a $25,000 crt projector is REAL? My first projector was an infocus. They have really been jumping on the HT market. How do you like the Dragonfly and what size/brand screen are you using?

I don't know that I am for sure. It may be medium def? DVD progressive through an interface box which converts to RGBHV??? or something close. What I did notice is that it is not 480 lines like my present projector. With a 10'dia screen I could not pick out pixels at 2'away. At 480 lines I can pick them out at 10'away. Sorry, I'm still Ignant (ignorant) at this point on high def.

Hey, thats ok. I had to learn the hard way too. I have a HD LCD projector. One of the top five lcd's on the market. A high end progressive scan player. Top of the line component cables with a straight signal. 480i picture. That is as good as it gets for now. I DID consider it HD but I have been proven wrong. But you should see the picture quality of this 10 footer. WOW!!! Very cool. Can't even see pixils at a couple feet - can't wait for 1080 dvd.
And even what some people consider HD has still been stepped up.
Try this out for size: getting a full 1,920 horizontal resolution, you would need a $100,000 plus electromagnetically focused front projector with 8 or 9 inch crt's. Resolution is limited to the source.
A display that scans all lines v/h (1080 or 720) will display high def- signals. If the material (source) is capable. Straight out of the new Nov. HomeTheater mag. (for all the challengers) ;)

I've been wondering about that! The 480I or 525p is as good as it gets now for DVD? Is that true? No 540p or 1080I from DVD yet?
