"Tubular Bells" Mike Oldfield 200gm LP

This is a true audiophile recording. Anyone who remembers this masterpiece first released in 1973 (the year I graduated high school) will not forget how ground breaking it was. I forgot how incredible this album is and to hear it remastered and on this high performance vinyl is like experiencing it for the first time. I have no hash or acid in my system now to fog up the real experience.
Mike Oldfield blended electronic, classical, progressive rock, (saxon like) ethnic, (Scottish like) folk, new age, and world musica styles all in one masterpiece! This recording is completely complex in nature and elaborate. He plays something like 20 instruments layered together and it is a sonic blast that ends with a really cool rendition of the sailor's song.
It brings you through many, many emotions; gets you breathing heavily, then lowers your mood, brightens you up with goosebumps and then gets your foot tapping away.
The vinyl itself is dead quiet. The music, the instruments come right out of mid air, it is quite exciting.
I highly recommend this LP.

Well Joe, you and I graduated HS the same year. I have TB on CD and from time to time I pull it out and remember those good old years of the 70's. I have friends that say the entire decade is a blur.Michael

Ok, let me throw some cold water. Listened to this "not too long ago" and felt it was very dated. No condemnation here as to to the sound quality or the memories it brought back. Agree as to the impressive musical talents of Oldfield. I just felt it wasn't as timeless as I thought it might have been. Frankly, I was dissapointed in my reaction. Sorry to be the party pooper.

Was your reaction to the 200 gm release? I'm not to sure I would have has the same reaction this evening if it was a run of the mill LP or redbook CD.
I just listened to the 200 gm release, (I'm starting its own thread) of Led Zepplin. Whoa baby. -

No, my reaction was simply to an original lp recording. My comments meant nothing as to sound "quality" but rather simply to the music itself. The "type" of music just didn't do it for me like when it came out. Perhaps you are right that if I heard the high end recording it might spark something again. -

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all

My experience with the Classic Record pressing last night was sheer delight. The instruments were coming out of blackness and mid-air with a dynamic punch.
