now the mm120s are the old series right, and that makes the 124s the new ones. my question is which one is better by sound quality, price, and BOOM? any thoughts...

    fact versus fiction...

the MM124 has one technical glitch -- the surround glue -- this was recalled and then repaired so everything on the shelf now has "no" problems that anyone knows of. The mm124 also "fixed" some flaws which were known with the old 120's.

    120 problems:
-Tinsel leads were too short - upon high excursion more than a few momo's had the tinsel thread leads rip away from the cone - thus trashing the speaker unless you wanted to sit there with a soldering iron and try to get htem back on -- i told most people who bought the old momo to simply cut the tinsel lead from the start and resolder it with an extra inch of high quality 24 gauge wire.
-this may only be a rumor but it has been told to me by a few that there were some motor structure problems w/ theold momo. I do not know if that is true.
-the cone of hte 120 was a good deal heavier than the 124's and thus it is not as quick for response -- although it did make the sub hit a little bit harder -- not volume wise - mean TONE wise. but most people wouldn't even notice that. the lighter mass of the 124 is a GOOD thing -- less stress on teh surround / motor structure / and will probably lead to an overall longer speaker life.

functionality wise -- i would buy the 124's anyday over the 120's -- look's wise, i'd buy the 120's - the 120 has an all chrome basket and rear end as well as a nicer looking dust cap. it's a prettier sub with allen screw construction -- its a show sub. the 124 is a show performance sub with normal looks -- its got a cast alloy basket that resembles an alpine type R's as far as texture goes. it looks good -- but its still not chrome. and isntead of the stamped chrome "MOMO" logo on the old one -- the new one has a sticker that says momo.

now the price on the new one is a lot less -- new momo 12's are only 225 at crutchfield.com -- old ones are about 275 (originally at 399 each) however, you can get brand new in box old mm 120's off ebay for about 300 for a PAIR (150 each) -- where as the new ones wll still run you 200 each even at auction.
**note -- polk does not give warranties for auction bought product**

if you are going to mount the subwoofers normally in the box (not inverted) get the MM124's -- hell its gonna look the same from the outside anyway -- and it'll be more durable or "industrial" as polk calls it.

if you're going to invert them... get the 120's just cuz they look so damn good - but try to find a registered dealer to buy from so that you get warranty -- god knows i'd want warranty on the old ones.

MM120's didn't have chrome baskets, they were painted silver. The paint was slightly different than the silver paint on the new MM124's but most people wouldn't notice the difference.

The initial production run of MM124's and MM104's had a problem with the glue bond at the spider. The MM124's are available again and have no problems, the 104's will be ready soon.

The cones between the two were very close in weight- the cone/ surround/ spider/ voicecoil assembly are .05 lbs difference. It's not like the only difference in the new ones is a (barely) lighter cone.
