External Hard Drive Question....

Ok, after all of the troubles I have had with a PC, I decided to go Mac.....I will be receiving a 15" MacBook Pro next week, and I would like to pick up an external HD (maybe 2) for music and photos.....I shoot in RAW format, and those can fill up a HD quick, so I need a good amount of space...The only parameter I have is that it needs to be portable....I have looked at the iomega drives, but I want to see what everyone else is using....Thanks

I've had good luck with my Western Digital, 500GB of space and quite small.
Tom's hardware is usually good for these types of questions link -
I like the MyBooks... small, cheap, durable, and they power-off when your computer powers off (what a novel concept...).

I use the My Book as well(160GB). I can highly recommend it."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

"Consistency requires you to be as ignorant today as you were a year ago." - Bernard Berenson -
I like both of those, but I need something that is powered by USB or Firewire, as in completely portable.....I like the MyBooks, but I think they require me to plug it in....

The WD ones I reffered to were the MyBooks, I have used a 160gb and upgraded to the 500gb. Both, to my knowledge, need to be plugged in to function.
Not sure if this one needs to be plugged in, but $50 for 400gb is a pretty good deal. -
I could be wrong, but I think anything hard drive based is going to need more power than a USB cable can provide.

Yup, they need 12V and USB provides 5.5 and Firewire is somewhere around there also.
DO NOT get USB for a HDD, you will notice lag. Firewire is the only way to go.God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. - Romans 5:8 -
You can get smaller drives that are powered by USB. They're usually slower-RPM units that don't need as much power (5400rpm in the case of the link before).

I've also seen drives that plug into two usb ports. Not sure about the mac, though.

Staples has 400 gig externals on sale this week for $50 each.

I back up my home server every night with a USB connected Western Digital 250 GB drive - easy to use and I've had zero problems.

I've had one WD internal drive die, so I've been leery of them. I bought a external Maxtor drive and have been very happy with it. It's about 2 years old and never had a minutes trouble out of it.

I have a MyBook w/ one terabyte that I received on sale at Office Max for $350.

i have a seagate 120 gb drive sitting in front of me using USB power. it uses 2 usb cables to power it. one for power one for data.
if speed is not a concern then get a USb otherwise look into firewire. -
I love my new Macbook pro, I ended up with an iomega 120gb usb/firewire drive.....It was the smallest one I could find that didn't have a ton of awful reviews...I got the "protection" plan anyway though....I drop things a lot..:o

my fat chick videos wouldn't even fit on that thing and that's only a small part of my collection.

So now that I have bought the damn thing, is there a mac forum out there that doesn't suck nuts? I looked at several today and I really think I wouldn't fit in at any of them.........
